The pace of growth in the economy in the fourth quarter of 2017 was boosted to 2.9% from 2.5%, reflecting the biggest increase in consumer spending in three years and higher investment in business inventories.

The economy got a big lift from consumer spending at the end of the year and businesses also increased investment. In the government’s latest GDP update, consumer spending was revised to show a 4% increase instead of 3.8%.
That’s the largest gain since the end of 2014. The increase in spending was mostly tied to higher outlays on transportation services such as plane rides and package delivery.

Had it not been for the terrible Q1, we would have had 3.0% growth last year.

Every positive story from this day forward is for me, tempered by the horrible omnibus bill passed by Trump and the Reps. I can't get over that.

Get a grip dude.... 90+% of the voters dont give 2 shits about Omnibus. Hell, I keep up with politics much more than the average schmuck and had never even heard of the bill till like 2 days before it was signed
Omnibus Schomnibus, that shite is old news. Enjoy the winning or gtfo the train

I wasn't happy either but if Trump back doors the funding for the "wall" out of the military budget it will lessen the sting a little bit, maybe a whole bunch depending on how hard the Prog/Dims/Enemedia melt.

I downloaded the GDP data in excel and ran some quick calcs and the GDP for 2017 was 2.52%. If you remove the first quarter 2017 the GDP would have been 2.96% for the three quarters from 2nd to the 4th quarters of 2017.
I think it's fair to remove the first quarter of 2017 from the incoming presidents "record", if you will.
So if the first quarter GDP for 2018 comes in at 3.21% the GDP will be 3% for the last year from the end of 1st quarter 2017 to the end of first quarter 2018 (not calendar year).

what are your top objections to the bill?
Posted on 3/28/18 at 8:21 am to Bunyan
Still looks like I was too optimistic, although it's great to see everyone coming around to agree with me that numbers like 2.8 are fine, really. My last pick before the official numbers started coming out was 3.1, with a "confidence interval" of 2.8-3.2. Of course, I can link that
It seems a bit much for everyone to be celebrating two quarters of barely above 3% in 2017 quite so much, but take what you can get, I guess
Also, be it known that I appreciate all the shout-outs from those whose feelings I've hurt

I'm pissed about the Omnibus bill too but I said this yesterday and it bears repeating:
quote:
I was expecting a huge drop in Trump's poll tracking after the passage of the Omnibus bill Friday. I guess we do live in a small but loud conservative echo chamber. Despite the large backlash from conservatives in Trump's base (including me) he has only decreased one percentage point from last Friday, 47% to 46%. I guess most people just don't pay attention to politics like we do. Heck, most people probably never heard of an Omnibus bill.
