Looking to pick up one for dove season and occasional clay shoot. Are there any brands to avoid? Since it wont be used that often I don't want to drop that much cash, but i don't mind paying for quality. I have seen prices range from $300 up to thousands of dollars. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

I found a used Beretta many years ago that I bought. It fits me like a glove. I found it for $1500. Pretty much all of Beretta’s and Browning’s o/u are going for $2500 and up.
CZ’s are made by a factory in Turkey. I don’t have one but I understand that they have performed well and are a really good price. I’ve played with one in a store but that’s about it.
There are other cheaper options but I really don’t know much about them.

Go to the store and hold everyone under your max price. The $400 Yildiz isn’t bad and is a decent option if you just want the style. It will feel like a cheaper gun once you feel higher priced options though. A field version Browning or Beretta are great and will be around $2k.
I used to have a Browning Super Lightning 12g (damn canoe accidents). Beautiful gun, not too fancy, and fits nice. It kicks like a pissed off mule though. If you plan on using it to shoot a lot at one time, get a 20g.
Used ones are also a nice option.

I have a 28” Browning Citori that I bought used for $1200.
Lots of guys are going to longer barrels so you could probably find a good deal on gun trader.
I wouldn’t buy a lower end over/under.
If you want to save money, try and find a used Ruger Red Label.

Just got a LNIB sporting clays OU Beretta off gun broker for under $2k. MSRP for 3500. New CZs are about the best bang for buck right now. You can find good deals on used Browning and Beretta if you take your time and shop. Cabelas gun library will come off the sticker if it's been hanging around for too long. Look at cheaperthandirt.com too

Check out gunbroker. On the search banner put "12 ga o/u" or whatever gauge you want. Some good deals come up if you are patient. Used SKB shotguns are nice. Also watch for Charles Daly guns made by Miroku for them. This is the company that produces Brownings. You may find a Beretta or Browning in your price range.

10-4 I don't plan on pulling it out of the safe more than 5-10 times a year, but when it is out I intend on shooting a good bit so comfort is probably the main thing. Are there any pros to a 28g over a 12g or 20g?

username@gmail.com if you don't mind shooting me over some info, definitely interested to take a look at it. Thanks.

Depending on what your planning to use it for a 20g is about perfect it seems to me.
28g is slightly larger than a .410 but shells are just stupid expensive.
I have in my head that I’d like a 16g but not sure I could justify it.
Mine is a 12g. Want a 20g

Speaking from experience, your shoulder wants a 20ga for dove hunting!

Go to budsgunshop.com and check out their O/U. Good prices, good service. They even have 16 gauges.

quote:1. As was posted, 28 gauge shells are expensive. And they contain less lead (fewer pellets) than a 20, and a LOT fewer pellets than a 12.

2. Benefit of 28 gauge is less recoil than 20, and much less recoil than a 12.
3. You really ought to at least consider the Beretta semi-autos. Less recoil than an O/U (much more comfortable when you plan on a long shooting session) and you get three shells (instead of two) when you bird hunt. Plus, they are a LOT cheaper than the Beretta O/U's.
Just my $.02 worth

Thanks for the input I already have an a400 this is just going to be something I want to use due to looks and feels more traditional to me.

My dad, a competitive skeet shooter, could and did own just about anything you could think of. His personal favorite was an Ithaca SKB 20. I couldn’t begin to guess how many cases of shells he ran through that little gun. I own a Belgian browning lightning 20 that will be mentioned in my will. Great barrels and drops just right for me. The Ithaca will be a good bit cheaper. I also think the CZ’s are a great value.

Buy you a used Beretta 686 and be done with it.

My grandpaw found a Ruger in a lawn shop a few years back for $450. It’s mine now and I love it

I got the Yildiz spz ME steel and it hasn’t failed me yet. Would recommend for the occasional shooting. And for the price you could get 5 yildiz for the price of some of the other guns mentioned. So unless you got money for whatever or are going to shoot skeet or sporting clays every weekend, I would suggest the yildiz.

I wish I could find one of those deals. A good Red Label that's not beat up, scratched up, etc... sells for around &1,000.
I've got an all weather 12 and a blued 12. I'd love to find a good deal on a 20.
