I do more to help socialism than you do to help capitalism.

Not class envy at all. I just don't care for hypocritical whiners like Hawking.
It doesn't matter if he no longer "needs" a job. He never got off his lazy arse to even look for one. Bernie Sanders in a fancy scooter.

Good thing he stuck with physics and didn't go into economics.

I agree. Thats why he was a hypocrite. I bet he didn't even actually write those books.

Well, that's the end of that.

I see a lot of panties wadded in this thread. It would seem everyone is missing a key point.
IF robots produced everthing and individuals were not required to work or contribute anything to the economy or society (because it's all done by robots), THEN what he described could be possible.
But as long as a job is required to put food on the table, and as long as the economy rewards hard work, his description is impossible.

How many books did he write (and profit off of)?

Did he leave the forwarding address for where we can collect our share of his royalties?

Exactly.
The people who have a vested interest would never allow a "free" society where robots did all the work. Why would they?

The problem with his theory is that it's incredibly simplistic. Capitalism naturally regulates consumption, supply, and demand. If machines took over every aspect of the economy and all means of production, allowing everyone access to all goods for free, we would rapidly consume and use up all of our natural resources. Quality of life would be great for a short time, then go to shite quickly.
It would also eliminate any type of sentimental value of certain goods such as gifts or luxury items. Plus an entire population not working would not be healthy at all.

Exactly that^.
"Utopia" would be hell in the end. It would be like living in a Liberals world view.

So Hawkins utopia was Wall-E? That may have worked for him but no thanks, I’ll pass.

Hawking was just such a person. He enriched himself in capitalist ventures.

I am more interested in what flavor of Ensure was his last meal.
