Are we getting closer to Fusion energy?

In just 15 years, the US will be producing unlimited amounts of nearly free, completely green energy. Not only would such an energy holy grail mean the end of humanity’s dependence on expensive fossil fuels, it would also be a panacea for climate change.
Amazingly, this is not a science fiction. It’s actually about to become reality if a collaboration between MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a private company, is to be believed. The collaborators announced Friday in the journal Nature that they believe they are on the verge of cracking the code to nuclear fusion — and it could be commercially viable in just 15 years, according to The Guardian.

There's a lot more at the article, but the TL;DR version is Fusion can work if you have strong and energy efficient magnets. MIT is claiming they now do and an Italian energy company is giving them $50 million to build a fusion reactor.
Is this wishful thinking or are they really 15 years away from "free" energy.

fusion has been 15 years away for several decades now...

Well nobody here is a scientist so who knows.

Truck nut futures down in heavy trading.

shite, there will never be free energy for a consumer.

big oile will never allow "Free" energy to happen. The Movie The Saint is decent about this

Fusion Energy is always right around the corner. I am sure we will see it soon.
Kind of, okay maybe, or I don't know maybe not.

This is true

Let's just hope Bane doesn't get his hands on a scientist and hijack the reactor to hold Gotham City hostage,...

I'm pretty sure containment has always been known to be the biggest hurdle since R&D really began looking into fusion reactors, well after finding a viable energy-sufficient method(Lawrence Laboratory was up to 500 terawatts for compressing hydrogen to 100x the density of lead the last I really read on it) of starting fusion. Now it's mostly a matter of increasing efficiency. I will be glad to see the tech become modular sometime in the future, i.e. sizing up or down for anything from powering local area to spacecraft
I always thought the stuff they were doing over at the National Ignition Facility was some cutting edge stuff. Here's a layout of the 500TW beam systematically firing spherically at a pellet of fusion material
"NIF's basic layout. The laser pulse is generated in the room just right of center, and is sent into the beamlines (blue) on either side. After several passes through the beamlines the light is sent into the "switchyard" (red) where it is aimed into the target chamber (silver)."

What would happen to the O&G economy?
FUBARed?

The fusion of elements requires pressures equivalent to those deep inside stars. I can’t imagine any technology that could duplicate that.

What would be the next big fake BS scare tactic????
It's cold
It's hot
repeat for all of eternity.
