The tag for Bell is worth $14.544 million for the 2018 season. The Steelers and Bell have until July 15 to agree to a multiyear contract or he will have to play the season on the franchise tag.

quote:

"We're not coming to a number we both agree on -- they are too low, or I guess they feel I'm too high," Bell told ESPN on Monday. "I'm playing for strictly my value to the team. That's what I'm asking. I don't think I should settle for anything less than what I'm valued at."

quote:

Bell said he wasn't bluffing when he told ESPN in January that he'll contemplate retirement if asked to play on the tag another year. All options are on the table for Bell, who says he doesn't plan to sign a tag anytime soon and would likely skip training camp once again.

They need to make the tag more cap-prohibitive.

Teams shouldn't be able to tie up someone over and over like this. You don't want to give him a contract, let him go and teams will trip over themselves to give him what he wants.

I'm not an expert on this, but theoretically doesn't this mean a team can just franchise tag a RB each year, pay them a lot for a single year, and give them no future contract?

This seems like it is bad for a football player in case of injury.

well i believe if you do it multiple times in a row, it goes up prohibitively

and he's making a shite ton every year he's tagged

he's not getting $15M/year on the free market

Exactly why Bell isn't happy. This is not good for him, especially a running back, to play on a year to year contract. Because there is no guaranteed money

Well, now, here’s an interesting stat: since the #Steelers drafted Le’Veon Bell in 2013, they’ve played 66 games w/ him and 21 w/out him. They’ve averaged the EXACT SAME 25.3 ppg w/ and w/out him. @NFLResearch

Its going to be his last year in a Steelers uniform.

He’s not worth an extra $6 million per year than the current highest paid RB.

he's going to make like $27M over 2017-2018 so he's doing just fine (even from a long-term perspective)

“Tie him up” by paying him more than any other RB next season? Dudes going to make about $27mil in his two franchise years. Cousins made over $40mil in his two years. Sign me the frick up for that.

Theoretically it is, but RBs don't get a lot of guaranteed money on the open market anyway. Devonta Freeman signed the biggest contract recently and he got 22 mil guaranteed, signing last off season. If Bell plays under the tag this year, he will have made 26+ mil guaranteed from these last two seasons. Leonard Fournette is the only RB with more guaranteed money than that.

Not the point. I don't even think he'd expect that.

Under the tag's getting a guaranteed number for only one year. If he blows out his knee his value is nil.

With a contract he gets a much larger guaranteed figure.

highly unlikely he'd have signed a deal that gave him more guaranteed money than what he's made the past 2 years

But he could get more guaranteed money long term and feel a lot better about his financial future and career.

when you add in his insane 2017-2018 and the guarantees he'll get in a year, no way. he's WAY ahead

but those were two one year deals. If he blew out his knee, he wouldn't get that second tag. Players want long term stability because shite happens and these one year deals give them absolutely no long term protection

What if he had torn his knee up this past year? He'd be SOL, right?

I guess he got lucky and stayed healthy.
