Super proud dad here - Son at range

Went to the range yesterday with my son who is ten. I was shooting my ar15 at 25 yards and my son asked to shoot. Now mind you, He has only shot a B.B. gun at Boy Scout camp but was able to pick up how to shoot the ar15 with little training. First time he shot it I asked him if he wanted to shoot the target a little closer and he said no, “I want to push myself”, well here the results of him shooting an ar15 first time ever with no assist from me at all and doing it at 25yards. I and the range officer were in awe. Range officer said the grouping would make a marine blush.

Or scroll down a bit, someone posted it for me

I am a big believer in training at a young age... keeps them from developing bad habits that they will have to unlearn later...

Almost criminal that the boy had to wait til 10 years old to shoot a real rifle. Glad you got him out. Marksmanship builds confidence and discipline. Set up a B.B. or pellet gun range at the house.
Target archery is another great thing for youngsters.

But at least he’s making up for lost time.

Nice job! It's amazing how many people pick up bad habits from TV and games that affect their ability to shoot and how hard it is to train those habits out. Teach them young and teach them well.

True, I didn't realize how bad my technique on my 360 quick scope was until I was 25.

Plan to take him more. We just found a range that we like. Unfortunately I used to travel alot for work so I couldn't spend much guy time with him. I'm making up for it. He was a little hard on himself yesterday. He wanted right in the center X each time. I explained that only practice will make him better.

You should have explained to him at 50 yards he would have been.

Awesome! I'm sure you're a proud Papa. I've got video of my son's first time shooting mine. His previous biggest gun he shot was his Henry Golden Boy in .17 HMR. He squeezed that first round and started laughing with his eyes big as buckshot...lol. But he didn't have near the grouping.

That's incredibly good...video games work!

Great shooting for his first time. Kid has a knack. I'm taking my 7yr old daughter to the range Wednesday to shoot her 22. I had her shoot in the back yard at about 50 ft and she can group about 3 inches with just the front of the gun resting on a bag. I'm going to let her shoot at 25 and 50ydsat the range. Gotta get her ready to kill a deer. Once she can shoot at 50,i will let her shoot at 100yds.
I don't have another light caliber to let her practice. In the deer stand she will shoot my 270wsm. I don't think it will matter once she sees a deer in the scope.
