What he is doing is inventing a strawman. It is good to know that the US has been so vulnerable until this tariff proposal though. To think... China was poised to take DC ANY DAY!

It's pretty ridiculous to suggest that we need an arbitrary 25% tariff on all steel imports (including all of our allies!) because national security.
If we really were in the middle of WW3, we'd probably have to remove the tariff so that Canada could help us meet production.

IKR!? Think about how dangerous is used to be to flood the US market with cheaper steel! I mean, If China attacks, where are we going to get steel?1!?! 1

It's the chinks man. They sold us rotten steel so they could destroy our huge steel market and take over!

I just heard someone from the auto industry on Fox earlier say that 90% of the steel and aluminum used here in auto comes from US plants. So not much of a bump.

The number being tossed around here is 200 per car. If that's true, and we sell 17,000,000 a year, then that's a decent chunk of change wasted on bullshite.

not much need for a tariff in that case either

quote:That extra money means we have less to spend elsewhere, and our purchasing power will decrease as well. So even that extra money, which goes to a very tiny portion of the United States, is worth less because of that policy, along with the 13.5 trillion dollars of US money supply and our nearly 20 trillion dollar GDP
Would that extra money, birthed and spent in America, more than make up for the lost trade?
Answer: easily
So we're going to increase costs to support a 130 billion dollar market (0.7% of GDP) with 140,000 jobs (0.1% of full time employees) that AT MOST can gain 34% compared to its current market share.
So when you say easily, you can't mean easily a benefit, because easily a negative seems far more probable.

Doesn't DJT deserve the benefit of the doubt to see how this tactic plays?
If China or Canada makes a concession and we implement zero actual changes, that should be viewed as a significant "win" by every American.
Kind of similar to Trump "withdrawing" from Paris Accord yet we find out a month later that US will EXCEED ALL PUBLISHED GUIDELINES REGARDLESS because of private US corporations stepping up. Huge win for Trump and America in that instance.

It has rarely worked in the past, why would this be any different?

And if China or Canada add/increase tariffs on US imports, that should be viewed as a significant "loss" by every American.

Modern cars have steel in them? Must be crappy arse steel. I collided with a hog last year. The hog won.

i just want to thank all the women out there. Without your insipid stupidity and moronic feminist desires to drive trucks and jeeps - like men - cajoling your men into buying them for you - we would not see those prices being $10k higher than they ought to be.
Far more pressing to get these women back in Honda's and Buick's than to worry about this tariff.

Multiply by the 17,000,000 cars sold every year. What is 17,000,000x200x10 years? Who is getting that money? What is being done with it? Who is paying that money?
The money is turned back out into our economy!
