I'm planning on making a 2 week trip to Europe and the UK in the fall, probably late October. We were thinking of Germany, Italy, France, Ireland and Scotland. What are your thoughts on best places to fly in, then the best place to fly out (meaning the cheapest)

What type of budget?

Are you really trying to hit all 5 places, or are you looking for an itinerary to fit a particular budget that hits two or three in the 2-week period? That's a huge swath of territory to cover in 2 weeks.

$15K budget, but not trying to spend it all if I don't have to, trying to find the best deals. If all are not possible, we will narrow it down to what fits best for the 2 weeks we will have.

Far too many places to try and visit in a 2 week period.

Germany, Italy, and France could each easily take two weeks to do properly individually.

I would narrow it down to two places maximum and spend more time getting to really explore them, rather than spending half your trip rushing around from place to place.

Just my two cents.

First trip to Europe OP? That is a lot, but its doable.

Doing Italy and Ireland in the same trip makes no sense. To put it in perspective, you are basically trying to Fly into Miami, go to Orlando, Atlanta, Boston, DC, and flying out of NYC in 2 weeks. If that sounds fun, more power to you.

My first trip with my parents we did England, France, Germany, and Belgium for 2 weeks.

I'd definitely cut out Italy or Ireland, and probably one more place.

Hell, all are POSSIBLE, but why? You'd spend 2.5 days in each country....plus waste much of your 2-week vacation traveling from country to country. Unless you're on the adult equivalent of "Make a Wish" for someone who's got very limited time left on earth, you should pick one or two from that list and try to focus.
--what do you & your traveling companions want to get out of this trip? Scenery, outdoors, activities? History, museums, cuisine, art, religion? Hanging w/locals? Checking off major sights on a list? Photographic opportunities? Particular kinds of food/beer/wine? A connection to family roots or personal history?
--how many people? couple or family? mobility issues and ability/activity levels?
--language skills? are you intrepid & a good traveler, or do you need eight suitcases, a butler, and a concierge to tell you where to go & make reservations?

You mention trying to find the best deals, but that means different things to different people.

You should definitely be able to find cheap fares to europe during this time frame. I think I already saw one deal a few weeks ago for $500 roundtrip fares to europe around halloween.

London has the nonstop from New Orleans on British Airways so if convenience is a factor that may be what you want to go with even if it's $200 or more expensive. As far as cheapest airports, it really depends on what cities the airlines decide to include in their sales. This last sale had berlin, frankfurt, munich, geneva, zurich, stuttgart, etc.. but did not include paris or london. LINK

Two weeks seems like a long time but it is not long enough to visit all those places. My first choice would be to spend the two weeks in Italy, maybe flying in to Rome and home from Venice, with Tuscany and/or the Amalfi Coast in between. My second choice would be to fly in to London and take the Chunnel Train to Paris. I have done both and am doing the two weeks in Italy trip in a few weeks.

Guys thanks for all of the comments, suggestions and advice. I haven't been to Europe or the UK. So maybe we will split up the trips and do two separate at different times. It will be me and my wife, we want to see the scenery, locals, wine and sites. I guess we have a lot to think about and start planning on the most important places we want to visit. I do know Paris will be one for sure.

Now, you’re giving us something.......fly the nonstop BA to London, enjoy it for a week, then take the Eurostar train to Paris. This is efficient, as you simply take the underground to the train station and get on the train (no arriving hours early like at the airport). Train drops you at Gare du Nord; you can pick a hotel near one of the pink line metro stops to make things easier on you. Side day trips out of London and Paris abound, in case you think you’ll tire of the city.

Single biggest tip for a novice Euro traveler: pack light. Every hotel offers laundry service, or find a self service laundromat. It is much easier to manage a single wheeled small case and backpack than a gigantic case plus other bags.
