A good start would be to largely dispose of this whole "student-athlete charade" - at least in the case of major basketball and football. We all know that folks like John Wall, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Deandre Ayton aren't/weren't at their respective institutions to get an education/degree. Let's just call it what it is and pay them above the table a fair amount for their value. The NCAA and its amateurism bullshite just couldn't be more disingenuous. The NBA could help by doing away with the one-year removed from high school requirement as well.

Make it like baseball.

Either go pro or stay 3 years. Will improve both leagues tremendously.

the stereotype is that you're insulting the black race by assuming they can't handle a real education.

they are capable of far more than they believe they are.

but you can't do this unless everyone is doing it.

I agree with the poster who said let them go pro out of high school or require 3 years. I would actually make it 4 years, excepting running backs.

I agree. Baseball does it correctly. Take the risk out of high school, or go through college and get groomed for the pros. Frick that one and done shite.

Not a good idea to give one position preferential treatment over the others imo. That is kind of the whole point of being able to come out straight out of high school. You'll prob see more RBs do that, which I am fine with.

Perhaps you should focus your frustration on solving issues related to our failing public school system and other socioeconomic issues that hold these athletes back academically.

Have taught at all levels... and YES, if they had been held accountable all throughout, there would not be this "incentive" to just get by.

What's the current standard? Because every student aflete I hear do an interview sounds like he struggles to spell his own name.

Academic standard...that shite's a joke.

This is the real issue.

There are big prospects in these high schools that can barely read.

Jerrell Powe made it through 12th grade and graduated without anyone telling him he was severely dyslexic and couldn't read.

Think about that.

Once diagnosed and treated, he actually ended up being a smart guy that did fairly well in school.

It's a billion dollar industry that for generations was rife in waste and lost opportunities. Sports Admins are changing the sports business landscape for goood.

I dont necessarily care about what majors the athletes choose. But I absolutely believe we should raise the standards for athletes. I believe it is absolute bs that kids are studying their butts off in high school, but because they finished with 3.6 gpa and a 26 on the ACT, they will miss out on a lot of top schools. Meanwhile, some of these athletes will have a 2.0 gpa with a 14 on the ACT, yet they won't have any troubles getting into the top schools.

Athletes are dumb because we allow them to be dumb.

I am fully aware that this would lead to the CFB product diminshing greatly, but I am ok with that. It's pointless to call them student-athletes when they aren't given the same standards as the rest of the student body. If we are not going to care about athletes and their education at all, then there needs to be a seperate league that allows players to compete at a high level before the big leagues.

understood, but these athletes have a marketable skill, and top schools are willing to give them a scholarship because of those skills, which are useful and bring value to the university. It's the free market.

And there are already plenty of schools (FCS, Div. II, III, etc.) that probably don't lower their admissions for athletes. So we're just talking about the big-time schools.

I trust this is sarcasm.

Quite sad that the vast majority of football players are in Sports Administration. Only a precious few in Business, Engineering, Pre-Med, Accounting, Architecture (props to JD Moore!), etc.

I realize a lot of players may not be able to handle these rigorous majors, but if they studied anything legitimate, with the contacts they make playing ball at LSU, they'd have so many doors open for them upon graduation.

But most don't take advantage.
