I did this once before with Billy Joel's Nylon Curtain but I think I've found a much bigger album that wasn't well received when it came out:

The Cars - Heartbeat City.

Solid from beginning to end but seen by many as one their weakest efforts.

I say bullshite. This is a damn fine recording.

I need to check that one out, I dig the Cars.

The Smashing Pumpkins Machina 1 and/or Machina 2. A lot of people don't know that these exist. Machina 2 was given away by the band, right before they broke up in 2000. Songs like "Home" and "Let Me Give the World to You", are some good stuff.

Couldn't agree more Was the very first LP I ever bought on my own.

Hello Again is my favorite Cars song. And the rest of the album is dynamite for the most part.

Van Halen's 'Diver Down' and Aerosmith's 'Done With Mirrors' are two more like you're talking about.

Heartbeat City is great. Hate that Orr won't be there for the HOF ceremony.

I would add the Stones 'Goats Head Soup'. Often overshadowed by Beggars, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, and Some Girls (as it probably should), GHS has some great moments: 100 Years Ago, Winter, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo

Badlands, Bandlands, from 1989. Just one hell of an album.

Radiohead’s Amnesiac. A collection of mostly b-sides and songs that didn’t make the cut for Kid A, and yet I think it is a stronger album. Some of their most interesting and experimental stuff can be found here.

Ha, you beat me to it!

Have you listened to the B-Side collection for In Rainbows. It was pretty widely released but if someone just downloaded the regular album, they have missed it. Outstanding stuff, especially Last Flower and 4 Minute Warning.
