Damn. Here in Georgia, you can opt to pay a one time fee of 7% and never have to pay property taxes on the vehicle as long as you own it.

Funny (or not funny, as the case may be) enough I just called for a quote before seeing this thread.
Over $900. How do people in one of the poorest states afford car tags in MS?
There's "registering it" (paying the taxes) and "registration" (the sticker for the plate).
Registration in MS is incredibly low, about 1/8 what it is in chicago.

Your MS registration renewal fee will be printed on your renewal notice. You will need to pay the renewal amount of $12.75, plus any county specific fees. If you don’t have your Mississippi registration renewal notice, contact the your MS county DOR office to determine your fees.

But isn't sales tax on a new car capped at $300. When I lived in Greenville, that's what I remember.... I drove older cars so my renewals were always less than $100

About $100
+ whatever it costs to get my CEL to turn off.

Vehicle inspection is a gigantic scam. Just another government money grab.

I wonder how many folks have done that and then totaled the car in the first few months. Doh!

1% of msrp +48 dollar flat fee that decreases 10% per year so... i paid 700ish for my tags this year next year will be 600ish..

Would suck for them.
We haven't done it though. We tend to keep ours for a minute and pay for new vehicles with cash so I'm hoping that we don't have anything like that happen in the future.

Thats what I paid on mine, $300. I believe it changed this year to a percentage but I bought mine the last week of 2016 under the old new vehicle tax rate.
Just looked it up, changed in July of 2017
quote:
New Vehicle-Related Fee Beginning July 1, 2017 Beginning July 1, 2017, people who purchase vehicles in South Carolina will owe a new type of fee instead of paying a sales tax. Due to legislation commonly referred to as the Roads Bill, if you buy or lease a vehicle, trailer, semi-trailer, or other automobile on and after July 1, 2017 that will be titled and/or registered in this state, you will owe an Infrastructure Maintenance Fee (IMF) instead of sales tax. The IMF is in addition to applicable title and registration fees and property taxes. You will not be able to title or register the item until you pay the IMF. The amount of IMF you owe is based on the sale price of the item you buy. You will owe 5% of the purchase price, but it will be no more than $500. If you purchase an item that is $9,999 or less, your IMF will be 5% of the sale price. If it is $10,000 or more, you will owe $500.
