Sorry I didn't get enough jam bands started to meet your more patrician sensibilities.
It's just laughable you are claiming to be responsible for ~18 bands. What are the minimum requirements for said bands?
FWIW there hasn't been a BR band worth half a shite in quite some time
Also the jam band jab is pretty weak, I'm pretty confindent I saw much more diverse music than you in 2017 and that is by established artists in legit venues around the country- not some open mic night in Baton fricking Rouge

I’m sure you did. I only saw two shows in 2017 that had a cover charge more than $15 and that was because a friend had an extra ticket and the other was a birthday present for my SO. That has nothing to do with BR sucking and everything to do with being a poor law student. Yeah, I bet you ate way better food too. Not being just above the poverty line will do that for you.

I'm interested in hearing these 18 bands you spawned. Got a link to some tunes? When's the next big show?

Idk if it's been mentioned, but one of the most underappreciated parts of BR is the Mississippi River. Taken for granted that the 3rd largest river in the world is in our back yard.
Once had a German Foreign Exchange Student cross the bridge with us, and he was in awe of it. Face glued to the window. Said he learned all about it primary school much like we learn about the Amazon and Nile.

There’s a racist moron in the mayor’s office and city leadership is largely incompetent. BR does have a lot going for it, but it’s tough for it to achieve its potential with this kind of very poor city government.

I do enjoy getting to see large docked ships on the river when walking to my car in the morning.
some shite labeled "ULTRABULK" was there this morning.
looks like it was the ULTRA PUMA

For a mid-size city, great food and drink scene. Several fun parades and festivals. Less than 30 minutes from some of the best freshwater fishing in America. A quality public park system. The people really enjoy life and enjoy facilitating a good time. Anything related to LSU sports is a plus. Many historical venues. Those are the things I miss.

I helped introduce the guys who went on to form Captain Green. It was a super group formed out of 3 or 4 bands including Gris Gris that all played shows with the band I was in at the time. Captain Green has spawned tons of other bands like Burris and Minos the Saint. I still sit in with Captain Green from time to time. They may have eventually gotten together, but I gave them the idea to join together for a specific show we were playing.
There's one example, and it's a jam band, to boot.
My band is playing tomorrow night at 524 Studios. We'll be opening for a couple touring pop/punk acts. There's a couple other local bands on the bill, but I'm not particularly familiar with them. This is only our second show with the full new lineup which includes a new singer.

I've been living in Baton Rouge since 2001 (LSU) and owned a home here since 2008. Here's my list of things that are good about Baton Rouge:
1. I love my neighborhood. It's quiet with nice neighbors and has a large park across the street for recreational use.
2. Many good restaurants. No where near the level of New Orleans, but BR has made significant strides the past several years in their dining scene.
3. Crime is segregated to three really shady areas, and you have no business going to those areas...ever. I have never once felt unsafe in Baton Rouge and I am smart about the places I visit and also the times I visit said places.
4. It's 45 minutes from Lafayette. One hour from New Orleans. Super easy to jump on the interstate and visit those two cities and drive home.
5. Really nice BREC parks around the city for enjoyment when the weather doesn't suck.
6. LSU and everything it offers, from sports to events.
7. Baton Rouge has a surprisingly good opera and musical scene, both through LSU and also the Baton Rouge Symphony.
Those are just some of the reasons I enjoy Baton Rouge. The city certainly has its problems and shortcomings, but if you focus on family and enjoying life, those things don't really impact me.

but it's hilarious to me when people list proximity to New Orleans as a "good" thing about it. As if you can't just live in the city that's so great (in their opinion) that just being close to it is good enough for your city.
I grew up in New Orleans, and being able to just drive over, and visit, and then leave is a huge plus for me. I don't want to live in New Orleans, but being able to quickly visit friends, family, and also visit the good things NOLA offers is a plus.

And do these people also not realize new Orleans has a fricking airport and you can just fly there from any other God damn city in the world.
Because that's the same as an hour long drive

but great food is reserved for places that actually do great food. It’s nowhere close yet. Getting better, yes, but it’s just damn dishonest and embarrassing to call it great when it just isn’t, and anyone who eats great food knows it.
I mean it feels we are just talking fine dining here. In which case, yes, Baton Rouge has a way to go in that regard.
But I had a "great" bowl of pho from Dang's with a banh mi that was also pretty damn great. Fiancee and I also had some kick arse Indian from Curry & Kabob Saturday night that was some of the best Indian I've had lately.
Doesn't need to be white table cloth to be "great."
Good food is good food.
