re: What's actually good about Baton Rouge...

It’s a common misconception that “great food” means “fine dining.” Most chefs in major cities are trending away from fine dining/white table cloth “steakhouse” style places and choosing a much more casual and approachable atmosphere with food that is more intricate and sophisticated than the surroundings suggest.
That said, Baton Rouge does not have a great food scene. It’s certainly improved dramatically, but no, it’s not “great” by any stretch.

Not many cities have a "great" food scene, but for a city its size and where it started, Baton Rouge has come a long way in a short while and has some really good restaurants that aren't owned by restaurant groups.
Just because it's not "great" doesn't mean it's a knock in the city.

I agree. I think BR does well for a town of its size. I was just disputing whichever poster (can’t remember) that said it was great, and your assertion that a great food scene means white tablecloth.
Although for what it’s worth, I just spent the weekend in Portland, ME, which is much smaller than BR, and their food scene blows BR out of the water.

Also a major tourism site. Charleston, SC has a much better food scene as well. My opinion is that Baton Rouge has one of the best selections of restaurants (both hole in the walls and fine dining) of metro areas under 1 million people that aren't tourist cities. I think it stacks up pretty favorably in a lot of categories when compared to its peers in the same way.
Baton Rouge does not stack up favorably compared to metros with several million people like Seattle, L.A., Houston, and Chicago.

Greenville, SC has a better food scene than BR and half the size.

Tourism site? Sure. Major tourism site? Not really. Especially not this time of year.
Three months of the year there’s an influx, then it goes back to a very small town feel.

Obviously. Which is why I used Portland as an example, which has a population of less than 70k.
Look, I grew up in BR. I’m not here to shite on the place. I enjoyed living there and going to college there. But the assertion that it has a “great” food scene is just wrong. Greatly improved? Yes. Great? No.

And that 3 months of tourism injects a ton of money into the economy just like football season does for Baton Rouge. Maine gets nearly 36 million tourists every year, most of whom visit Portland. It is a $6 BILLION industry for that state.
LINK
Baton Rouge even gets just above 4 million.

So your assertion is that because people go to an entire state for a few months of the summer that the city is a “major” tourism city? What constitutes a “minor” tourism city? Where is the line drawn?
Honestly at this point you’re coming across as making excuses for BR than making a well-reasoned argument.
Side note: I was talking with our waitress yesterday and when we told her we were originally from Louisiana, she informed us she was going to Baton Rouge on Wednesday. So there’s some added tourism for you!

Nice edit. You’re comparing a state’s tourism numbers against a cities. What do you think Louisiana’s tourism industry brings in each year?

I helped introduce the guys who went on to form Captain Green. It was a super group formed out of 3 or 4 bands including Gris Gris that all played shows with the band I was in at the time. Captain Green has spawned tons of other bands like Burris and Minos the Saint. I still sit in with Captain Green from time to time. They may have eventually gotten together, but I gave them the idea to join together for a specific show we were playing.
There's one example, and it's a jam band, to boot.
I can personally vouch that kingbob is full of shite seeing how I am actually in CG. Which members did you introduce exactly? Which members of Captain Green spawned Burris or Minos the Saint? When was the last time you sat in with us? What was the specific show you were playing that "gave us the idea" to be a band? How exactly are we a jam band? Haha what year did all this happen? How high are you?
