Why is America so different than the rest of Western Civilization in this regard then? There are plenty of countries with very similar media to America, internet is global, social media is worldwide. Why is this an America only problem?

The shooting aspect may be more American, but I'm starting to wonder if the socialization aspect is? I'd like to see some research on it, that's for sure.

Technically, it's not. Europe has had it's share of mass shootings.

The Winnenden school shooting occurred on the morning of 11 March 2009 at a secondary school in Winnenden, Baden-Württemberg, in southwestern Germany, followed by a shootout at a car dealership in nearby Wendlingen.[1][5] The shooting spree resulted in 16 deaths, including the suicide of the perpetrator, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer, who had graduated from the school one year earlier.[1] He also injured nine people during the incident.
Sounds awfully a lot like what happened yesterday. A kid coming back to a school he used to attend.

We aren't the only country this happens in. What we are is the only country our media covers events like this when they happen in them. Also we have a butt load more schools and even more of a butt load more students than other countries.
