re: When will society accept that college isn’t for everybody?

The second part of this problem is that we have too many brick and mortar Universities and Colleges who cannot survive without the government making loans to kids to attend.
Did a thread about this yesterday. Only public universities in Louisiana worth a damn is LSU and apparently Louisiana Tech.
ULL is so bad it’s not even ranked by USNWR

Higher education was intended for a small percentage of society and that’s where it needs to be.
Is that true? Who intended it to be so. Are you speaking of the original colleges and universities started in this country? If you are, then they were almost all founded as seminaries, which also taught law and education as means to further Christian values. Things change over time and those universities quickly expanded to incorporate all aspects of higher learning. Also, what is that magic number? Right now about 36% of people 25 and older have a bachelors or higher.
Also, you should tell that to employers who want people to have a 4 year degree for jobs that clearly don’t need one. I had a college professor back in the 80’s tell our technical writing class that many employers really want a college degree solely for the purpose of delaying entry into the workforce. In other words, they want older, more mature, entry level workers. I doubt that has changed.

I have a BA from LSU in a major that I’m not using for my office job, so happy that I wasn’t the one paying for it. I’d be so mad if I went 5 figures in debt for this.
Well, who was it that you were willing to let pay for the degree and who was it that failed to advise you that your BA would likely be worthless other than a means for you to get a better job in some random field not your within major?
quote:
Look what happened to the high school diploma. My parents told me that there was a time most people didn’t have that and it opened doors. Now it’s nothing.
Try and get a job without one that will allow you to be self sufficient. Even with one it can be difficult. Technically schools require them just as college does.
quote:
All you’re gonna do is have a society with college degrees, with no jobs, and will mostly be 5-6 figures in debt
That will be more of a function of the economy and the types of degree’s people obtain. A degree that is in demand by definition does not have enough degrees people available to meet demand.

Timmy who has a 2.1 high school GPA in his senior year that college is the only way to get ahead in life. Timmy should probably be told academics is obviously not his thing and that he should probably go to trade school.
I can’t say I totally agree with you about Timmy because I don’t know Timmy. I knew guys like Timmy who went on to excel in college but they were not the norm. They were, however, more common than you might think. Timmy’s teachers probably have a good handle on where he should head, assuming they are at all involved. But I do agree that peopl should be steered more realistically. A good trade may earn you more money than a college degree, though statistically speaking, a degreed person will out earn a non degree person over their lifetime. A failed attempt at college only gets you life experience.

Admissions need to drive up requirements to get in.
That has been happening.
Timmy doen’t Get in at LSU unless he has a special talent(like being an exceptional athlete) or circumstance.

The first responsibility of society and government is to keep the population safe. The second is to educate all citizens in as broad a manner as possible so that the first responsibility is fulfilled.
Without a rich education there would be far more posters on the poli board. Imagine that horror.

I was taken aback at first, but then looking at the 450 incoming freshman and their parents, a good half of them won't finish 4yr college anyhow.

Although I agree that many will thrive in different education/career paths, I don't fault anyone who decides they want to give college a try. That is their right, and the only thing I expect is that they honor any financial obligations they sign into.

Why should you have to go to a 4 year college to become an accountant? We should have a 2 year accounting school instead. You can learn history on your own if you desire.
As an engineering flunkie, with a BA in History, who's currently working as an Accountant (certification from BRCC), I completely agree with this. My $4k certification is making me much more money than my $30k degree.

That's just doing a quick scan. I should say over half the kids' parent(s) didn't appear to have 4 yr degrees based on the number of Cintas uniforms that were not engineers in FRCs.
Yeps. It's Mandeville. Madisonville will get it's own HS very soon but for now... There are shitload of Skippers.
And I just grabbed USnews link for ranking(select public to omit Magnets). It's #11 there with Magnet but #1 without magnet.

Doesn't really matter if "society accepts it". It's what the market demands. With manufacturing gone or done by robots, most good paying jobs these days require an education. People sense this and push little Johnny towards school for his own good.

Exactly, I didnt take 4 years worth of freaking accounting classes. I sure as hell im not using any of the sciences I took, or the basic marketing class. Im not using things from business calculus either. But i had to waste time and money on those classes.

College is a waste of time and money for 75% of people who attend. Money grabbing scam, 100k bill and still can’t do a friggin thing useful. Vo-techs, trade schools or the military would do most of these whiny assed kids some good, maybe

Yeah but you can do that at a younger age. HS to a degree and the beginning of college shouldnt be as broad as it is.
