Does anybody remember the 1981 animation/movie "Heavy Metal" where a astronaut was going to re-enter in a 57 Corvette, don't remember the context, but when I saw the Tesla in space that's what I thought of?

You were just the lucky one who I hit reply on. Nothing personal, just business.

Its a pretty interesting idea that given its an electric vehicle it could in theory one day be driven around Mars.

Radiation will probably render in inoperable in a few years time.

It's much dumber than that. I love it.

Pretty much. It was a systems test and they needed kg to test it with. It could have been anything, they chose a car. Whatever it was they didn’t want be too important because the risk of loss was high.

I think this is why people hate on the Musk fanboys. The guy needed simple weight to simulate a payload so he threw a car in there and everyone starts sucking his cock and calling him a genius. A bunch of steel plates would've served the same purpose. You nerds bring the hate on yourselves because of your starry-eyed nonsense.

Everyone was excited because the biggest rocket since the Saturn V took off and two out the three rockets stuck a perfect landing. The car on top was cool and showmanship, but the successful launch is what's important. He's got showmanship so he put a car on there, why put steel plates when you can do that?

In the manned spaceflight thread everyone keep reiterating the point that space is all about muh inspiration. Well there were a shitton of inspired kids yesterday, would they be equally excited seeing a steel beam? It just seems like bandwagon hate on the guy without having a clue about the details.

It will be in orbit around the sun, not mars.

And they overshot Mars, it will make an elliptical path out to the asteroid belt.

Well that's why he did it: to bring publicity to what he's doing, isn't it? It seems to have worked because it sure has the mouthbreathers all worked up into a lather and talking about it. A block of concrete wouldn't have generated that kind of response. I'm also pretty sure the block of concrete would at least be smart enough to know that Elon Musk was trolling the frick out of it and not give Musk the publicity he was looking for.

I'm the furthest thing from a Musk fanboy, but if you can't appreciate this bit of whimsy and acknowledge that yeah, he makes rockets, and he could do it because he also makes cars, well, that makes you...

It's not expected, nor was it planned to land on Mars. It's supposed to remain in a heliocentric orbit at about the distance of Mars. It was to prove they could launch so much payload and get it that far out.

Why would you put one in space?

When they test rockets they usually use a payload of concrete. Musk thought, rightly so, that it would be cooler to put a car in space and livestream it. I loved the "Don't Panic" message on the console. I mean that last picture OP used is basically a kick arse ad if they wanted.

The actual rocket is the bigger story yet the typical nerds are focusing on the car.

Musk is like Widespread Panic. It's not that I hate their music, I just hate their fans.

You know where this project would be if a government agency (NASA) had been in charge?

They'd still be evaluating prototypes on a simulator and developing scopes for future studies....and be 60% over budget also.
