Y’all need to look at the way they rank courses. Sometimes the best courses in the state can’t get ranked because they don’t have enough evaluations. There is probably room for improvement in some states rankings.
The people who rank them do know what they are doing and know what to look for. I’m speaking from experience since I’m a panelist.

If the result is a shite list, then the process is shite. If the process is shite, then the people who came up with it don’t know what they’re doing.

It’s not a perfect world. Some clubs don’t care about rankings and don’t want to be considered. So if they all participated then it would give accurate data.
I can promise you the masterminds that come up with the way to rank have thought about all angles to improve it.

I'm guessing there is a mistake with the NC course ranking. They listed Linville Ridge but NOT Linville Golf club.
LR is a neat mountain course but most feel like it is middling at best. Maybe 40 years old. Nothing special.
Linville Golf is a Donald Ross gem. Hundred plus years old. Has barely been touched. It is kind of like Pinehurst 2. It is all right in front of you and you think you'll be fine and you shoot 10 over your number.
Anyway..

That’s a lame excuse. Even the ones listed are laughably out of order. Have you been to the Bluffs lately? It was in sad condition before it was hit by two floods that basically wiped away two holes. Membership is down and they haven’t fixed those two holes. But sure... 4th best course in the state.
ETA: there should be a disclaimer: “These aren’t really the best courses in the state.”

With regard to the LC courses ... Grey Plantation is nice. If Contraband is really a top 10 course then that doesn’t speak highly for the state of courses in LA.
I haven’t played the Nugget yet, but it looks really open and desolate.

Read up on how they evaluate and you’ll have a better understaning of how the rankings work.
There are a lot better courses however they don’t have enough evaluations to qualified.
I don’t see how that’s Golf Digests’ fault. There just aren’t enough panelists in Louisiana and not enough courses in LA open up to be evaluated.

Again. What good is the process if the result doesn’t reflect reality at all? If that’s not their goal, fine. Then don’t call it a “best courses” list and instead call it “here are some courses in each state that let us rank them in no particular order”
Posted on 2/3/18 at 9:09 pm to ell_13
To be fair, you have to have enough evaluations to give an accurate rating. If not, then is it better to just take one person’s opinion and call it Gospel?
At that point, form your own opinion.

That’s a single argument and not even the issue. I don’t need to see the process to know that it’s a bad one because bad courses are high on the list. It’s an 8 year average right? Are the most recent evaluations weighted more? Does it even have to have an evaluation in the last year to be considered?

You have to have 25 evaluations in a 10 year period to be considered to be best in state.
Most of the good courses in the state have less than 7 evaluations. The problem is there aren’t enough panelist in the state and other panelist that travel to LA may not go to some of the courses needing evaluations.
The process works for almost every other state and works good for the top 100 next 100 and best public. Hundredths of a point separate some of these courses from being ranked to not being ranked.
They’ve added more panelist to the group over the last year in hopes to get more evaluations to improve the rankings and make them more accurate. There may be an improvement in LA the next time best in state comes out.

quote:Good. In the meantime, it will be a bad list because it’s a process that relies on enough panelist and evaluations which not every state has.

FWIW, this is an old article from the summer but GD recycled it on twitter.

If you dig deep into how it all works, you’d realize it’s not a bad process and understand the best in state is just an added value. The real objective is top 100, next 100, and best public. That list is pretty darn accurate.
Just formulate your own opinions for LA. The top 3 are pretty spot on.
Hopefully our dialogue shed a little light on the how it all works.

So how does Black Bear go from #1 to off the list in a few years? Do all of the panelists live on I-10? Calvert and B.B. are better than The Bluffs.

Lakewood is nice too, The bluffs is my favorite.

Baton Rouge Country Club is the best conditioned course I’ve ever played. I’m a huge CCL fan but it doesn’t touch Baton Rouge CC

I agree. But that's only one part of the puzzle.
