Can someone please justify why Orgeron kicked the FG against ND?

Before anyone tells me to let it go, that's how you end up settling for mediocrity. O needs to be accountable for his decisions. I will never understand that decision, and that summed up to me how bad I think he is as an in-game coach.
Reasons to not kick:
1. You're less than a foot away and will likely convert
2. Your kickers were missing all season, including chip shots and extra points
3. Let Guice get his last carry
4. If you don't get it, you will likely force a safety and win the game.
5. Give them a 99-yd field if you don't get it.
6. It's a bowl game. What do you have to lose?
Reasons to kick the FG:
1. ?
Orgeron said something along the lines of that he kicked it because he was worried they would have another false start. So what? If you do, then kick the damn FG when you're 5 yards back. If ND was in that spot and they chose to kick the FG, I'd think their coach is a scared moron. Pardon my french, but that was a very bitchy move. He was asking for the loss.
He can't coach like that if he wants to put teams away. Aggressive play calling is the only way we came back to beat Auburn, which he was lucky to win.
That is not how Coach O coached in 2016, where he was more aggressive.

He's not a good coach. Nor will he ever be

Reasons to kick the FG:
1. He thought the defense could hold on to the lead a field goal gave.
Agree or not, that was obviously the reason.

Can you give it a rest

Ed sucks new thread #1 for today, I'm sure there will be more. Gonna get whacked soon because you can't say Coach O sucks on TD. Will Wade though, that seems to be ok for some reason.

No confidence in his line nor in his QB to easily hop a foot or two and stretch the ball over the goal line which my 9 year old could have done.

The kick from that angle was lower percentage than going for it.

He wanted that extra $100K. He kicked a FG to guarantee points, then hope and pray his defense would hold them.
Major failure.
Major failure.

Instead of forcing a TD to tie, he thought giving them a short field with a kicker that kicked from 50+ twice would somehow be better?
Orgeron did not help his critics at all. I hardly ever see coaches do what he did in that spot.

And pouting and crying about it prevents mediocrity? That must be something new. Is this a millennial thing?

I was not a fan of the Orgeron hire nor has he done anything to make me feel more confident. That said, give it rest already. Geez.

Where was your 9 year old in the first half. They could have used them when the first attempt at the goal line failed.

It's obvious that Coach O wanted to restore his kicker's damaged self esteem. Kickers are such a fragile bunch.

Didn't they get stopped once before inside the 5 and on another 3rd and goal from inside the 1 a false start brought it back?
Because the outcome was ND winning, this FG gets questioned. They kick and hold serve and no one really brings it up.

How many 1st and goals were unsuccessful during the Miles era. He made the right decision. He didn't know his CB/safety would make such a lame attempt to just stick an arm out to tackle the receiver. DBU ?? I don't think so.

Justify it? No one can.
You combine the odds of converting on that play, the odds of winning if you convert, the odds of giving up a score if you don't covert, then do the same for kicking the FG, going for the TD results in the higher expected value over a large sample size.
But Orgeron doesn't have an appreciation for predictive analysis or big data like a modern coach would. He seems to simply rely on anecdotal evidence provided by his own coaching career. He puts more value in remembering that one time he went for it years ago where he didn't convert and he lost the game.

29 days later? Seriously? I would have kicked too

The coach that is actually over-achieving is ok to criticize but the one that is under-achieving can't be questioned. The good ole baw network putting in work.
