In the UP visiting family and was wanting to check out some local brew. I picked up a six pack of Bells Hopslam but was wondering if there was anything else I should check out.

If they get it up there, check out Kuhnhenn Brewing. They're in Warren, 25 minutes north of Detroit

Every time I’m in Michigan I end up drinking Canadian beer and whiskey.

I haven't seen it here in LA since Bell's became available, but if you can find it, Bell's "Special Double Cream Stout" is the shite. It's seasonal and available this time of year. Pick some up, and make sure you pour the beer into a pint glass so that you can take in the color. You literally cannot see light through the beer and it's one of the best Stouts I've tasted.
Many Wisconsin breweries should be represented there too. I would recommend Lakefront, Capital and New Glarus.

Saw this but passed it up. Wife liked the name but didn’t pull the trigger.

I wouldn't have guessed that.
I never buy craft beer at stores and only know about it through friends and family up there.

I was in Green Bay for the LSU / Wisky game. If you happen to see "Spotted Cow" give it a try. Not sure if its available outside Wisky.

Transient is brewing some really good beers. Old Nation M-43 is also very good.
