I shot the land line 2 years ago for this very reason. I started to get a ton of solicitors calling my cell, but I installed the Mr Number app & it’s pretty much stopped all of them.

Once you have identified the spam caller, block their number with your cell phone (most have this built in today).
I bet I have a thousand blocked numbers in my phone and I still get 3 to 5 shite calls a day. So aggravating.

Leave a voicemail if it’s important

I get daily calls from people with Indian (dot not feather) accents with anglo sounding names. "Hello sir, my name is Mike from American Pharmacy. Would you be interested in discount Viagra or Cialis today?"
Discount Viagra? Please tell me more, Indian guy who called me out of the blue.

I can’t remember the last time I got a sales call. It’s probably been 5-6 years now. I forgot it still happened.
We don’t have a home phone. Because it’s 2018.

My cell phone has made it on the list

I think I’ve only ever had one or two sales calls on my cell phone. And they were from hotels companies that I have programs with. I just told them never to call again and it stopped.
I thought automated sales calls to cell phones were illegal. I guess I’m lucky that I’ve avoided them.

I work in sales so that's a dumb option.
Dumb for you maybe, but the average person getting spammed on his personal line should absolutely follow that advice. Don't pick up if the caller isn't in your contacts list. Legit callers will leave a voicemail.

Half the callers are from overseas and can't be prosecuted anyway. The rest are slippery and hard to track down. Finally, some are legal b/c they are connected to a political campaign.

The thing is that most spam callers nowadays aren't even telemarketers. They are scammers and robocallers. They are already running an illegal operation. They don't care about things like the "do not call list."

I probably average 8-10 per day. Either out of state or they spoof the first 6 digits of my number

I use NOMOROBO and it works about 50% of the time. It's worth it to cut down half of my bs robocalls.

You must be living right, I get automated shite all the time trying to sell me health insurance and other crap.

That's because they are constantly changing numbers, and/or duplicating actual people's numbers. Therefore, there is no way to track them down and enforce the rules. The block feature on cell phones is great.
Sure there's a way. If the agency/agencies that our tax dollars funded actually wanted to enforce this all they'd have to do was accept the call from a number that was on the do not call list, provide a bait identity to the company and eventually during the investigation the company would have to reveal itself and boom.....fine the hell out of one or two of these companies and publicize it. The others would get the hint and the calls would stop very quickly. Since the violations are so rampant it would be extremely easy to do. But then that would actually solve the problem and they'd have to stop taking so many tax dollars to 'regulate' this sort of thing. Not trying to go into conspiracy theory mode but they'd be better off creating calls than actually stopping them so they can legitimize continuing to take tax dollars. Not saying that's the case but you can't claim there's 'no way to track them down'. We literally have tax funded agencies dedicated to do this very thing.

I wonder what percentage of calls work out.
I had a local state farm agent calling me. I blocked his number, but all it did was sent it straight to voicemail. They would leave voicemails. I got the call every other day. He was filling up my inbox. I had to call them directly and tell them to take me off. I actively hate not only that particular agent now, but state farm as a whole. I can't imagine where this actually works. And I am willing to listen to cheaper insurance. When they send me a letter with a quote, I always compare to what I currently pay. But a random call where you "have great news that insurance rates have gone down" is not worthy of giving me a call 500 times

Somewhat perversely, the "list" has to be available - legitimate companies observe the list because they can be punished for violating it.
Therefore, every "business" who calls you, at least if you do not already do business with them, is a scammer.
Period. Every single one. Not a legitimate business to be found. Most are call centers in the Subcontinent, the Caribbean or Africa (generally where English is one of the official languages).
The only exceptions are political calls/surveys and some of the charities get an exception, particularly the law enforcement and firefighter charities - however, I don't reward bad behavior on their part and never donate, at least over the phone.

It is the worst. Politicians are excempt from it and they are the worst abusers. Robocalls about elections. Who has ever switched their vote due to a robocall?

We used to have so much fun with these pieces of shite when I was still in college. We'd be hanging out at the fraternity house when one would call and we'd waste half an hour teasing them and asking ridiculous questions until we got bored, told them to kill them selves and hung up.
