the biggest issue with a self defense gun for your home is what happens when fired.

bullets from a riffle or handgun will go through walls and doors, possibly killing your kids or others as a result.

a shotgun is the safest weapon in that regard

with what ammo? buckshot will go though many layers of sheetrock. .223/5.56 rounds will begin to tumble after hitting sheetrock.

i can attest to this as a neighbor had a break in new years eve. we share a back alley, his 5 shots from a .40 caliber handgun, 3 went through his fence and mine, only a crepe mrytle deflected these from going through my living room french doors another 2 shots I found in my roof.

he has a shotgun now for home defense

Nah. The only ammo worth using for home defense in a shotgun is buckshot (birdshot is stupid) and that is certainly more dangerous through sheetrock than a rifle round.

Depends on bullet construction and velocity. 55gr FMJ out of a AR will shatter quickly and have very little chance of over penetration. Most light weight, high velocity projectiles will deviate from their aimed path and loose energy after striking their first object. .38 caliber balls of lead from buckshot will go through multiple walls and will not deviate from their original path as easily.

This video starting at 3:50 shows that a light load of #8 birdshot from a 12ga will penetrate a home's interior wall of typical construction, a heavy load of #8 birdshot will go through two interior walls, but with minimal energy left after the second wall, or 4th layer of drywall. 12ga 00 buck will penetrate 3 walls including a wall with exterior lap siding, and still have enough energy to kill someone standing outside your house.
