We could be playing them week 1 on TNF
dammit
dammit

Actually way better to get that out of the way then.
Posted on 1/16/18 at 10:05 pm to LSUminati
And start 0-1, no thanks

Well that's a loser attitude

I mean, it’s just realistic. Not that the Vikings are better, just it’s really rare for the defending Super Bowl team to lose their opener. I know New England did but it doesn’t happen often

We will have roughly 20 of the 23 on IR back.
We will beat the shite out of them.

So they started the tradition that the Thursday night kickoff game would be hosted by the Super Bowl champion in 2004, here’s the results of teams that won the Super Bowl and the next season home opener
2004: Pats win both
2005: Pats win both
2006: Steelers win both
2007: Colts win both
2008: Giants win both
2009: Steelers win both
2010: Saints win both
2011: Packers win both
2012: Giants lose opener
2013: Ravens lose opener*(see weekend warrior79’s post)
2014: Seahawks win both
2015: Pats win both
2016: Broncos win both
2017: Pats lose opener
So that puts the super bowl winner at 11/14 in opening night for a winning percentage of 78.5%. A quick google search showed that the average home winning percentage in the NFL is about 57% to 60%. So this is about 20% percent higher odds in favor of the home team compared to an average NFL game.
Of things to note, the Giants who were the first defending Super Bowl winner to lose the following season opener were just a mere 9-7 when they won the Super Bowl and the ravens who were the second team to lose were just one game better at 10-6. This Vikings team is 13-3.
Furthermore, the saints are 0-2 in these games getting curb stomped by the colts 41-10 (Jason David being the lone saints touchdown) and then barely getting edged out 42-34 to the packers.
So yes, based solely off this, I’d rather not play them week 1 in Minnesota and start the season off behind the eight ball for the 5th year in a row.

Should be an asterisk for the Ravens. They had to play their opener in Denver because of a conflict with the Orioles game.

Good point, I overlooked that

You know what will be funny?
The Patriots having a walk off touchdown making the Vikings 0-5 in Super Bowls.
Skol.

Can someone explain the scheduling process. I kind of hoping the Vikings win the SB to make our loss hurt just a little less.. but not if it means we'll be playing them on TNF week 1

I'd like to play them here in the SD to open next year.

Well we already know we playing at US Bank next year.

Would be ideal to play our Thursday night game week one. It is an advantage over whoever you play week 2 and best for the health of your players
Posted on 1/17/18 at 10:25 pm to tibebecolston
So we will have 2 TNF games
Posted on 1/17/18 at 10:50 pm to Browncoatrebel
Our loss will hurt a LOT more if the Vikings win the SB, as the Whilliams Whiff will be played ad nauseum for all eternity.
Posted on 1/18/18 at 1:24 am to SuperSoakher
we will embarrass them week 1.
