Welter would have been a great umpire.

Googles 'John Chavis'

Johnny Chavis, nicknamed "The Chief", is the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team

Miles still was the HC. I don't think Chavis was great, but he is smarter then Miles.

That sounds like a call Miles would have made. Miles is straight up dumb.

Welter was a student of the game, first in the gym and last to leave brought his lunch pail to work kinda guy.

The Miss State game 2014 if you get a chance to re-watch you’ll see they weren’t even blocking him. They knew he couldn’t affect the game so they totally ignored him and blocked everyone els which created huge holes.

Disclaimer: I was not a fan of John Chavis most of his time at LSU, especially during his later years. Like many fans, I thought playing Welter ahead of Beckwith was one of many questionable personnel decisions. OTOH, who can really believe CJC would start Welter at MLB instead of Beckwith only because CLM told him to do so? Regardless, let's deal w/ facts. Welter was a Middle LB, NOT Outside LB. Only Beckwith was a MLB at LSU; everyone else in the original post played OLB at LSU.

Kwon Alexander: Alexander played OLB. "Two-year starter at outside linebacker for the Tigers in 2013 and 2014." LINK

Duke Riley:" Emerged as a defensive standout for the Tigers as a senior in 2016 after playing a significant role on special teams during his first three years with the program." Kendell Beckwith was the starting MLB when Riley started at OLB in '16. LINK

Deion Jones: Jones also played LB. "Jones started just one game during his first three seasons at LSU, occupying a reserve role each year. First, he played behind Tahj Jones, and then it was Lamin Barrow and Kwon Alexander last season."
LINK

Kendell Beckwith: "Welter, LSU’s senior starting middle linebacker and a lightning rod for criticism, whiffed on Auburn running back Cameron Artis-Payne during a 15-yard reception during LSU’s 41-7 loss on Saturday night.

He did not return to the field after that drive. Kendell Beckwith, his backup, said he played the entire second half." LINK

He put Beckwith at DE his true freshman year. Kwon never played MLB at LSU and yet goes to the pros where it is a significantly harder position to play and is a pro bowler.

Riley never plays anywhere but special teams and one year with Aranda and he's developed into an NFL talent.

Chavis' personnel decisions were laughable.

It's sort of funny actually. If someone were to talk about how bad Thomas Dunson or Adam McConathy were at playing linebacker, it's no big deal and hardly anyone would object. Say one negative word about Welter though, and people act like you're picking on a kid with Downs.

I love to celebrate our players accolades in the NFL. But I don't think it was necessary to criticize Welter to do so.

I prefer to remember our players' best moments, not their worst.

Kwon's a Pro-Bowl Middle LB in the league bro. Are you suggesting he couldn't have done that at LSU?
