Overall musical talent - Cornell

Pure vocal talent - almost too close to call, but Cornell by a nose (ahead of Staley).

From a HUGE Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam fan, it’s Chris Cornell.

One of the best rock and roll scream/wail voices of all time and it actually aged well.

I am currently sitting outside listening to pandora station with Cornell singing The day I tried to live...there is no doubt he is no 1. Layne is no 2

I dont think theres been a voice in music fit a song better than Vedder singing Black though

While I completely agree with you, I think Cornell had the best overall raw talent and I love Layne Staley.

Hate Staley's singing. Like CC when not screaming. Love Vedder's pretty much always.

I generally only like the PJ songs from Ten. Black is clearly PJ's best song - start to finish, top to bottom.

Even though vocally I have Vedder third of this group of three, I agree he nailed Black - no one could have done it better, I think. And he and Cornell were extremely close friends.

What are we talking about here? Seems like most people are talking about vocals exclusively - In which case, I would give the nod to Cornell. But I would argue that Vedder is the better all around musician. He plays several instruments and is one of the best songwriters of my generation.

Tough one:

Imma say Cornell based on raw talent and range. That said, Stalely's music is much more interesting and Vedder is close and has longevity

I just went back and listened to Right Turn (from AIC's Sap, EP, which is actually credited to "Alice Mudgarden" because it also included Mudhoney's Mark Arm and Cornell) - while Layne carries most of the load, when Cornell comes in, the difference is stark and unmistakable - as much as I like Layne Staley - and I like a lot more of AIC's songs than Soundgarden's, I may have to retract the "by a nose" bit.
