Soccer is a cheap sport to get into. All you need is a ball and a street, field, etc. I'd imagine that is a big factor in why it is so big around the world.
Swimming is super cheap, all you need is water... and the world is 70% covered with surface water.

I would like soccer if I had someone to cheer for. When USA soccer has a huge game I am as excited for that as I am for anything. I don't understand all the multiple leagues and shite like that. If Louisiana had a MLS team I'd probably be a huge fan, though that will likely never happen.

So you think people will stop considering it their favorite sport once they turn 55? I think the percentages show that it has been on the rise since it has become a mainstay in 1994. 24 years ago, today's 55 year old was 31. That 1994 WC was really the start of an uninterrupted string of soccer in this country. Anyone 22 amd younger has lived their entire life with professional soccer in America. As the current generation that's 55+ start to die off and the younger generations become that age (in 10-20 years), I don't see how that 1% won't increase.
I'm not predicting it to be the #2 sport by 2030 or anything like that, but you'd be crazy not to notice it's increase in popularity.

Gallup Poll - Americans favorite sport
Football is still king. On the whole, sports viewership is just down from what it used to be.

NBA seems to be the only sport on the rise.

You do realize that they polled 0.00003% of the population? It's idiotic to put any stock into this poll.
I used to work for a place that called people for crap like this back in college. I made shite up all the time just so i could hit my quota. The people that answer the phone and actually give you the time of day to answer retarded questions like this are old people that literally have nothing else to do.

I find it interesting that their seems to be a correlation between the number growing of people admitting they like soccer and the number of people now coming out of the closet

Soccer is fricking boring. If I had a dime for every tie snoozer I could retire in the Caribbean today.

Not exactly. The places where the British colonized like South Africa, Australia and India have cricket and rugby as their favorite sport. Soccer was spread by students studying in England, who eventually returned home, sailors who played the sport in port cities, and British expats to the new world.

quote:I would think college football would be on the rise as well. The NBA has had a really good run of top shelf talent in the last 10 years or so that has been good for the game. In the early-mid 2000s good players were hard to find. I think the game becoming much more guard-oriented has probably been good for the league. It feels like a completely different league than it was when Shaq/Divac were going at each other.
NBA seems to be the only sport on the rise.

That is soccer’s problem. It’s been on the precipice of booming for at least 20 years. It eventually has to take that next step. The USA missing out on the next World Cup isn’t going to help.

Ugh, it's called sampling which is why there is a sampling error % and confidence % included in what I quoted
Seriously open the links at the bottom of the article the OP posted.
Feel free to contact them:
quote:
Samples are weighted to correct for unequal selection probability, non-response, and double coverage of
landline and cell users in the two sampling frames. They are also weighted to match the national demographics
of gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cell phone-
only/landline only/both and cell phone mostly). Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2016
Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets are based on
the July-December 2016 National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets are based on the 2010
census. All reported margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting.
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce
error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls. For questions about how this survey was conducted,
please contact galluphelp@gallup.com.

A) best talent is in Europe. No way in hell I'm waking up at 5am to watch it unless the WC is in the west hemisphere.
B) absolutely horrendous sport to listen to on the radio - bad enough on television because the game day atmosphere is lost, but a radio call will put you to sleep 30 minutes after chugging Red Bull.
C) the fans and commentators are all pretentious as frick.
