Why did Reagan promote no fault divorce?

Warning: This is not a stab at President Reagan. This a question regarding one of his decisions.
The general premise of no fault divorce is that it doesn't matter which spouse harmed the other, they both get split assets for community property.
I wasn't born at the time. So if any of you can enlighten me on the politics of the time, I'd appreciate it.
He essentially allowed for the perfect tool to be used by Family courts. And since they are "courts of equity" there is no check to the system.
My personal disagreement is that if one spouse cheated or abused the other, they should get recompense.

The biggest and most obvious inequality in our country is how slanted divorce court is against men.

I agree. But so many conservatives love Reagan even though he technically allowed no fault divorce to exist.

I wasn't alive then so I don't know much about it. A lot of conservatives think of Reagan as off limits to criticize but I disagree. I'm more loyal to my beliefs than any one man.

Ronald Reagan participated in a so-called no fault divorce himself. His first marriage was to Jane Wyman, a bigtime actress. I think hew was our first divorced POTUS helping make divorced people more acceptable socially.

Community property is defined by the states and so are no fault divorce laws.
Give me a link where the fed under any circumstances have done anything regarding divorce laws.

This is an excellent point of discussion. I forget... Was it Reagan that did this? I do know at around his timeframe no fault divorce was born. In the last 10 years plus no court or lawyer cares about cheating, just the money they get. The cheapest is a dissolution if you agree on everything. No one hires PI's to prove a cheater because it doesn't matter.
Do you have to be married at least 10 years to get alimony nowadays?

No fault divorce preceded Reagan. He did not promote it and he did not try to eliminate it.

California was the first state in the US to allow no fault divorce. Reagan signed it into law as governor in 1969.
You must have missed that day in history along with the part where they discussed medical abortions.

Reagan was elected President in 1980. So, the Calif law preceded Reagan by 11 years. You must have missed that in math class.

No fault divorce (NFD) is an absolute disaster, especially for stay-at-home moms (yes there still a few of those left). It's downright criminal what these poor abandoned (and in many cases abused women) are subjected to. NFD basically comes down to the parties (including the women) agreeing to a settlement with the assets split (she gets custody of the kids, maybe the house, he gets the IRA, 401K, etc). Remember it's no-fault. In many cases the husband decides he doesn't want to pay child support or alimony so he sues for full custody of the children. He can alledge anything....say she's an unfit mother, whatever. So the poor woman has to liquidate her assets in order to hire a lawyer to fight to retain custody of her kids. So she watches as he forces her to drain her assets to fight him. Trust me good family lawyers are not cheap. Like I said No-Fault-Divorce is a disgrace.
People cannot fathom the injustice these poor women are subjected to. In many cases (not all) Family Courts in No-Fault-Divorce States are not structured to protect the abused or abandoned spouse. IMO NFD is a consequence of a moral relativist mentality that states no one is to blame, or indeed responsible for any damaging behavior. There is no wrong, there is no right, there is only compromise and negotiated settlement.
Look I don't really care about childless couples who decide to split the blanket. But when there are kids resulting from the union that changes everything. In those cases I would hope lawmakers would make it harder to get a divorce, not easier (infidelity, chronic physical and emotional abuse the exception).Furthermore, in those cases where a spouse abandons (or engages in chronic abuse) his/her family for another woman (or man) the courts should throw the book at the offending party.
That's my opinion on the matter of NFD

He was just trying to help keep black daddies around the kids. Could have been wonderful for little turds like you to have had a father around

In Louisiana fault divorces are so hard to establish but when they are I think the rules on property should change. Susie Brown can decide to screw everybody in town and Mr. Brown will still have to split the property evenly in the event of a divorce.

Because he was a divorcee himself
Knowing that, why did Hillary and Obama both support gay marriage?
The more you know!

No fault divorce has damaged the institution of marriage far more than gay marriage ever could, yet so many here treat Obergefell as if it was the demise of American morality while ignoring a more significant event decades prior.

Yeah, Zach I think you're right. There was no fault divorce in the early 70's.
