Depends on what events you're using it for and how often you're going to wear it. If it's your only suit and you'll be wearing infrequently, don't spend too much. For all purpose, worsted wool is good. It also depends on how you're built - do you like slim cuts or not? How much are you really willing to spend? Suit Supply has some good stuff for not horribly expensive. J Crew Factory actually has a decent workhorse suit for ~$300. Brooks Brothers stuff is nice and you can find more modern fits. There are also tons of online retailers (Bonobos, Spier Mackay) that can get you good suits and value but you must know your size and read up on fits.
Above all just make sure it fits for God's sake.

Mclavys in Baton Rouge. Dillard’s isn’t bad - there is a gentleman in the suits dept that knows his stuff
Mclavy might not always have sales but you can get a great looking sports coat that you’ll love wearing for $450-$600 depending on manf, material etc

I hope to be able to afford a BB's suit in the future
Instead, I just wait until they do their four dress shirts for $200 sale and stock up.

I get my suits at Dillard's outlet store in Kenner. From my experience it doesn't matter how much you spend on a suit, but getting it tailored to fit you is the biggest factor on how good it looks
I agree. Unless you are a 1 percenter, in which case you would have enough money to pay for bespoke suits, the fit is going to be the most important thing. Here's a good guide to how a suit should fit: LINK.
Most of these things can be taken care of by a tailor. The main things you need to worry about are length of the suit, the shoulders, and the armholes (armpit area). These are things that really can't be changed by a tailor. Suit stores usually have someone who knows what they're doing and will help you pick out something that fits lengthwise and shoulder wise. But I've noticed they pay little attention to the armholes. So make sure you find something that fits there.
Also, depending on the store, some suit stores only take length of the sleeve but don't take the jacket in any. If they aren't going to take the jacket in any, either ask them or just take the suit as is to a tailor well they'll do both. No reason to leave the suit at the store for a week while they only take in the sleeves and then have to take it to a tailor for the sides.

About once or twice a quarter I have a custom suit maker who comes to the office. Sets me up with a new suit. I guess I get a good deal since I usually buy all of my employees a suit as well each time he visits. Don't want them looking like slobs. His name is Guissepe and I have him flown in from Italy on my company's plane. Can give you his contact info if needed.
Real answer in Brooks Bros outlet stores. Their 346 Suit is decent looking. It's not going to be a fully canvasses, top of the line suit, but it will look good enough.

Carriages. Wont find too many "deals" but their tailor is really good.

Find you a J.Hillburn stylist and they will come to you and measure you and bring fabric choices for you. Very reasonable for what you get. Can get custom shirts, tuxedos, suits, polo shirts. Can also get belts, ties, socks, shoes and other accessories through them too. Most of your clothing is made in Dallas. Definitely worth looking into. Once you go custom you won't look back and you don't have to step foot in a store. Once you are measured you just pick a fabric and boom new shirt delivered in a few days.

While value is relative, I believe that there is "value" in each price point.
In the low-end range, Spier & Mackay and Suit Supply offer excellent value. Conversely, most of what you might find at Dillards or Jos. A. Bank is of considerably less value. In the mid-range, Samuelsohn offers great value. As does Kent Wang (for online MTM), Eidos, and some others.
You start to see diminishing returns pretty quickly after this point, especially in RTW. Although Kiton or Isaia or Attolini etc. may be of high quality, and use exclusive fabrics, their patterns are pretty uninspiring, drab, and meant to fit as many people off the rack as possible.
If you are going to spend in excess of $3, $3.5k on a suit, I guess you should go bespoke. However, there is a lot of bad bespoke out there, so if you are spending that much, you really need to know your stuff. Nonetheless, if you find a good tailor (which again, is more and more difficult to find, I have seen some pretty awful garments from A&S, Poole (who comes to NOLA), Huntsman, and the like), there is a lot of value there. Typically, you can send it back for cleaning / sponge and press when you need, have alterations for life, and buy extra fabric in order to make a new pair of trousers down the line, if needed.

Carriages tailor is a bit too arrogant for me.
I know most people who come in know absolutely diddly-poo about clothes, but I do.
If I want something tailored a certain way, I'd appreciate if my tailor offered constructive criticism instead of condescension.
