Has anyone thought about this...I sure have!

Something I haven't seen mentioned (could of missed it if so) was the scenario when we were at the 1/2 yard line at the end of the game. There is two different ways this could have been handled.
1) Go for the TD. If successful we are up a touchdown, kick off and have our defense make them go 75-80 yards for a TD to tie. Worst case...we're still tied and ND has to march 70 yards against our defense just to attempt a field goal with 2 minutes left.
2) Kick the field goal(even though we had already missed 2 from comparable distances). Kick off and give them 2 minutes to go 40 yards for field goal distance to tie, or as in our case score the TD and beat us.
To me I go for it. We make it and we're in the catbird's seat. We fail...chances are our defense holds them. We make them go conservative because they are stuck under their own goal post trying to run the clock out playing for overtime. If we use our 2 time outs they have to punt from their own end zone with maybe a minute left. Still time to try a last second field goal.
Any thoughts?

We couldn't stop them from driving 80 yards for a TD but you think we stop them from driving 65 yards to get within FG range?

No you’re the first one to mention it.

You have to play the odds. With the 2 stud RBs LSU had 99% chance of moving the ball forward a few inches.

You need to think faster than that, the game was yesterday.

Game theory optimal suggests to go for the TD.

No. Nobody has thought about this.

Well, buddy, if they were inside their own 1 they probably just try to run the clock out, whereas the 20 gives you room to operate.

Thinking in a vacuum, who would prefer to be in charge: Canada's red zone offense or Aranda's defense?

This.
Also have to consider the probability of a team getting into distance to kick a FG starting from their one inch line, as the OP mentioned. Typically teams use a couple of predictable runs just to get out of the shadow of their own endzone. You start them on the 20 though, it's an entirely different mindset.

We should have went for the td. Just my opinion. I mean, it's just a fricking bowl game at the end of the day. Why not put all the chips on the table and frickin go for it all? I would have expected our defense to hold them to a FG though too, so it was a bad sequence of events all around there at the end. We were clearly the better team for sure, and notre dame knows we let them off the hook and lost the game more than they won it. We didn't execute worth a shite on special teams all day long and that cost us the game more than anything. We were the better team when we played them in Nashville too and found a way to give them the game as well. I feel bad we lost, but I have a little solace in knowing that we were definitely the better football team.

With 2 minutes left and LSU having 2 time outs? No they don't try to run the clock out. We get the ball back in FG range if that happens

Stuck on the one yard line changes your play calling drastically verses being behind at the 25, behind and with nothing to lose.

Yes and if the score is tied ND was not going to be aggressive in play calling probably looking for OT than risk turnover.

So, have you actually done some GTO analysis you can present, or did you just spout something out of your arse to sound smart?

We had 3 chances to score and could punch it in. We only scored 17 points and was in the red zone numerous times. Obviously our red zone offense sucked all year and we took the somcalled given points. Our defense did not do their part to secure the win. Bottom line

Why is it every time we lose some fans say "we were the better team." If you lose, you generally aren't.
Part of being a "better team" includes coaching.
