It kind of goes against the boys related stuff of the 80s but Care Bears were HUGE during the 80s. They had films, tv and toys that were all huge sellers.
My personal favorite was close between Transformers with the movie, show and toys or GIJoe. I had so many GIJoe toys because you used to could get them everywhere and they were like a dollar or two and they lasted until you blew them up with a firecracker.
I still have an original Castle Greyskull and Skull mountain at my parents house so I was into He-Man too but I don't have many of the characters.

GI Joe was #1 in my childhood, but I grew up in Fort Sam Houston from 2-7. We would have massive neighborhood wars with every single character/vehicle/base. Truly a great memory.

Yeah, GI Joe were great Toys Bc they were cheaper and great for destroying with firecrackers or matches.
Transformers were more valuable, at least to me.
Yeah, and My Little Pony I think was big too.

TMNT was the biggest but a lot of it’s popularity was early 90s too I think.
Yeah, that's not 80's. The movie came out in 1990.
And while they had the cartoon in the late 80's - they didn't really explode until after the movie with a younger demographic.

TMNT was too late in the 80s to be in this list imo.

Probably Transformers.
Only two big ones that haven't been mentioned I can think of are 1) the Super Friends cartoon which ran from the 70s till 86 and 2) The Smurfs - they were absolutely enormous too. Obviously the Smurfs were aimed at younger children than the kids watching Transformers.

I don’t know. As a kindergartner in the mid 80s there was nothing bigger than he-man and go joe for me and my little buddies. Transformers were ok but we all preferred the first two. Think it just depends on where you grew up.
I will say those he man figures have held up to the point where my 5 year old plays with them when we go back to New Orleans to visit my family( even after almost 30 years of New Orleans summers in the attic)

He-man was really big but I think if you look at how long the show was on the air it doesn't compare to the Super Friends, Smurfs, Transformers, etc.
The toys were incredibly big though. And even though every other character name was synonymous with a sexual act parents seemed to buy them for their kids.

Ninja Turtles by about 1988 had easily become the biggest toy/cartoon trend for kids, it was so high the live cation movie actually was good and continued into the early 90s.
But before that, it was probably G.I. Joe and Transformers simply because of how mainstream the cartoons and animated movies were.
But He-Man in the early-mid 80s was gigantic.
There was simply no greater time ever than 1980s America to be a kid. The cartoons and the toys and the trends were unmatched.
Y'all should all check out "The Toys That Made Us" on Netflix. It's awesome and has separate episodes dedicated to Star Wars, GI Joe, and He-Man.

He-man and voltron were my 2 favorites, but based on the responses, I guess voltron wasn’t as popular as I remembered. I guess I’m the only one that preferred voltron to transformers.

MASK and Transformers. I had every MASK vehicle and they "transformed" for battle way quicker than my Transformers so they were more fun to play with. It would take like 30 minutes to transform all the Transformers and attack vs like 5 minutes for MASK.

GI Joe is the "most collected action figure line of all time" which I'm guessing means most units sold.
