Western storylines or themes?
Cause I consider movies like Jeremiah Johnson to be westerns

i'd go The Searchers and Once Upon a Time ... could put anything at 3rd, really, though i do think most of clint's films are a bit over-rated, except for Unforgiven ...

This is like asking what’s the best running shoes? It’s going to depend on your tastes.
For me it’s
- Shane
- TGTBATU
- Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
I’ve got to confess I’m biased here. Shane is the first western I ever watched and it was my grandfathers favorite movie. He also loved Liberty Valance. I’m just a fan of the Sergio Leone movies.
Unforgiven and Josey Wales are right there. I also like Appaloosa and 3:10 to Yuma. Both the original Magnificent Seven and the remake are good in very unique ways. Rio Bravo, Once Upon a Time in the West, High Noon are all wonderful.
And just because, I really enjoy Maverick and can’t not watch it if i see it on tv. For that matter the two James garner “Support Your Local...” movies are good

All valid points.
There's no best...just favorites.
I picked my favorites from the 3 sub-genres.
1. The Epic Western - Once Upon a Time in the West
2. The Classic Western - High Noon (small movie but full of emotion and drama and the straight and arrow hero who's going to do what's right - set the standard of lone man being betrayed)
3. The Rustic modern western - Outlaw Josey Wales (blurs the line between bad guy and good guy and right and wrong...and how it's not black and white celluloid anymore...it's messy.)
