...as DL coach and recruiter?

you'll always finish second for a DL recurit

he gets some hate from lsu fans for "finishing second" on alot of big time recruits and that did happen especially for the last few years at lsu. However, he had some beastly lines while at lsu and that was the main reason Chavis' D was so good(to go along with a great secondary). Brockers, Logan, Montgomery, Hunter were a few of the guys he brought in. He struggled to bring in a stud DT his last couple of years and that hurt.
In all fairness, I think he's just "ok". Not awful like some lsu fans will tell you but there are better out there.

Thanks. Was he finishing 2nd on in-state DLs? Who was beating him for DL recruits?

His coaching has also been questioned. When Hunter was drafted by the Vikings they made it known that he had tons of raw talent but lacked in the being coached up department.

He always seemed lazy to me. In every video of practice you would see he just stood there with a big ole chaw in saying “good good good”.

No he was finishing 2nd on big name guys like Tim Jernigan and wasting a lot of effort doing it. I think the only big guy he landed was Sam Montgomery who basically said he came because Russell Shepherd recruited him.
He didn't land much at Texas either. Got some leftover Louisiana guys that didn't have big offers.

quote:
"As soon as we drafted him, I made a cut-up of every single rush he had at LSU," the Vikings' defensive line coach said. "I had him come to my office, and I said, 'I want you to explain to me what you were being taught to do.' So we're sitting there, and he's explaining to me how they were teaching him to rush. Well, you run [a 40-yard dash in] 4.5 [seconds]. But you take off on the snap of the ball, and you run wide. Now, the offensive tackle just kicks back and waits on you. You might as well be running 4.9, 5-flat. And number two, I don't think he was exposed to how the offensive lineman was trying to pass protect against him. He was just out there, using his athleticism and trying to make something happen. The first thing I wanted to do was find out what he knew and why I was seeing what I was seeing."

Average recruiter at best. Lacking in teaching proper technique in pass rushing. Great guy personally. As stated previously by other posters, the Minnesota Vikings were appalled at the lack of technique D. Hunter came into the league with. Hunter should have been the Arden Key of his day.

Hahahahaha oh my god. Did I just read that brick Haley is the reason chavis was successful at LSU? Hahahahahahahahaha
He’s a really good person, but there’s a reason he was fired from Mississippi state, the bears, demoted at lsu, and then fired at Texas. By the time he left lsu had zero pass rush and was 13th in the conference in sacks.
Haley inherited logan, mingo, brockers, and Montgomery by the way. Just read up on how badly he screwed up Danielle hunter before the Vikings finally coached him up.
He’s a bad hire and would be shocked if Saban took him, legit stunned

Even ignoring the recruiting aspect he wasn’t a good DL coach, we had a solid run of guys that made it into the league and needed significant coaching up

no, you didn't read that. you read that a beastly DL was one of the reasons Chavis was successful. when Chavis had an average DL(2013) he was mediocre. Haley started at lsu in 2009.

Meh. He didn't really do much at Texas.

You'll get a lot of recruits whose "heart was really pulling me to (insert brick haleys school) but I just couldn't say no to (insert competing school)"!!!

Good guy, better sauce, below average SEC coach.

Is he going to Alabama? What happened to Dunbar? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I haven't seen anything on this. Admittedly, I've been focusing on Christmas the past few days.

Greatest DL coach in the history of the SEC. Bama should hire him.
