Consumers should be able to buy vehicles directly from the factory

Cut out the stealerships in 2018. I really don’t care what benefit they provide. If people want to go to a stealership, they can, but people should also be able to go to factory and purchase a car directly at a rock bottom price. It’s archaic how that’s illegal still.

Buy from auctions...pretty much factory prices!

Agree.
The current system is nothing more than a protectionist racket in favor of entrenched local interests.

I don't disagree with your point, but let's list people products we can buy from the factory...

You want to force factories to hire salesmen and have service departments? They don't want to deal with the public because the public is stupid.

This seems like it should be on the OT.
Now, suppose the factory is in MI and you are in LA. How much is it going to cost to ship the vehicle, one at a time, rather than in a big bunch on a truck? What about test drives? Defects? Scratches? What if the car shows up in wrong configuration? What if the car shows up with 500 miles on it?
Not sure I want to go through those potential hassles and take money away from fellow locals that need jobs. A car is a big purchase. Helping a salesman with some commission is just part of the deal.
Now, if we talk about maintenance and warranty issues, then I think there's some room to re-structure things for sure.

Why would any individual factory be forced to do it? Car salesman detected

That would put too many people out of work. Do you realize that thinks like this are put in place to provide jobs. Most people in the world are fricking idiots. Jobs are created for people to prevent us from becoming a Venezuela. Most people go to work and come home and drink and watch football or grill out or whatever because they are too fricking stupid to do anything else. We create jobs to occupy the time and minds of morons so they won't become a problem. Let them be.

It varies state by state. It's not a national thing. In soe states you can buy a Tesla directly. In some you can't.

Surprised one of the big auto manufacturers have not tried it yet, not sure if it would work but would be an interesting proposition.

Tesla already does this and with them not having dealerships, they are not allowed in the Detroit Auto show.

As posted from a decive you didn't buy directly from a factory. All new factories should be forced to have an attached storefront open to the public

Because of the nature of people. The car fricks up and they want to take it to the place they purchased it for them to fix it.

I always knew you were stupid.

Democrats need something to occupy their time
And when they don't have it they wear pussy hats and scream in the streets.

This. I'm not real excited about taking my new car to Gary the grease-monkey to have him fix a minor problem that he possible could turn into a major problem because of no service dept. locally of the car company. I've already been that route. Fool me once...

Sounds good...but who will help honor all the warranty work and system to keep your car on the road?
Let's take Rolex as an example....if broken under warranty, you take it off your wrist and send it in for repairs and wait a month or so (strictly an example and may not be exactly accurate)
What would you do with your broken warrantied car? I'm in no way advocating for dealers, I'm simply asking how you expect the factory to get service and support in every city in the civilized world?
But I DO agree, sticking with Rolex model, the factory should set the pricing and all dealers are bound by the pricing. And the factory would have severe pressure to stay efficient enough to have high quality low priced cars put out.

Great point, sage. Except for the fact that that doesn't force anyone to do anything.

Would you by a car without a warranty? Use your head for a second! How would a factory sell car without support?
