Desiree Collins claims in her lawsuit that St. Paul police Officer Thaddeus P. Schmidt lost control of the dog, a 5-year-old German shepherd that bit Collins on a leg before “viciously” clamping down on one of her arms, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

The lawsuit claims the K-9 was reluctant to let go of Collins despite repeated instructions from Schmidt and another officer, resulting in injuries that required hospitalization, the paper reported.

“What happened to Ms. Collins was a terrible accident that should not have occurred,” police Chief Todd Axtell said in a written statement issued Thursday. “I am sorry it happened and that she was injured. As a department, we wish we could go back and do things differently. Unfortunately, we can’t.”

Police are at fault and admitted so. It's going to soon be raining cats and dogs for her.

She dindu nuffin
It appears that she actually didn't. Simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. That, and the police dog handler didn't do a good job of controlling his K-9.

Sad we are going to make her rich

It’s a lock case. I doubt her injuries are that serious.

She's about to get paid and she will definitely be on every prime time CNN and MSNBC show for at least a week.
ETA: I just took the time to read the link and she more than deserves to get paid. She actually truly did not do anything wrong.

The only thing that has surprised me from watching Live PD is how untrained many of the dogs are. They're constantly barking and jumping up on things while the cops encourage and reward the behavior. Dogs are a win-win for the police: you attack/kill them, they're an officer. If they bite an innocent bystander or destroy your stuff, then its just a dog.

It will be short lived.

It's one good reason why I could support legislation outlawing K9's if this hypocrisy can't be fixed.
The police, actually no, the government can't have it both ways.

There are truly some assholes on this site. This woman gets attacked by a got damn police dog and you're "sad" that she's going to get paid. Bunch of hypocritical douchebags.

Police K-9's are some of the most poorly trained dogs you'll find.

The department will be just as liable for damages caused by the k9 as by any other cop. Why would anyone think differently?
I think the perceived double standard you’re reaching for is cops killing other dogs.

German Shepherd Dogs have very large fangs which make it easy to rip flesh. She is an elderly woman so I'm sure her injuries were serious enough. The dog could have easily killed her.

So it should be easier for people to kill police dogs with less penalty, or you want police dogs to stand trial by jury with the potential for death sentence? I follow your basic logic, but not sure where you’re trying to go
