Drew Brees blasts Thursday NFL games after several Saints suffer injuries

Following a handful of injuries in his team's 20-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees took aim at Thursday Night Football games when speaking with reporters. Brees said Thursday games are "absolutely" unsafe — due to little rest players receive after Sunday games — and he thinks the NFL's high injury rate is "One-hundred percent a product of playing on Thursday night.""Do you understand what guys' bodies go through in a game?" Brees told reporters, via the The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. "And then to have to turn around four days later and to play? ... Is this smart as it pertains to guys' health and safety? No, absolutely not."
As a longtime players' union leader, Brees said he plans to have the issue "addressed." "When you see guys go down, when you lose guys for what you think is unnecessary just because you put them at a much higher risk in such a quick turnaround, that gets you upset," he said.
The Saints (9-4) suffered a slew of injuries on Thursday, including running back Alvin Kamara, who left in the first quarter due to a concussion. Other New Orleans injuries included safety Kenny Vaccaro (groin), linebacker A.J. Klein (groin), guard Senio Kelemete (concussion) and defensive end Trey Hendrickson (ankle).
Brees joined a long list of players who have publicly blasted Thursday games. Seattle's Doug Baldwin said last month that Thursday games should be "illegal" after his teammate Richard Sherman suffered a season-ending achilles tear Nov. 9 against the Arizona Cardinals in a Thursday game. LINK

Thursday night games should be banned

Good. People like drew need to speak out. A lot of guys will listen to veteran leaders like him.

Agree with this, reserve Thursdays for the college boys to showcase their talents in prime time.

If anyone was curious whether or not the NFL genuinely cares about player safety (LOL), they should no longer be. Thursday night games are a stain on the league. Shame on Goodell and the rest of the money hungry scumbags.

Injuries aside, the matchups are usually shite anyways. Last night was an anomaly. Get rid of TNF.

It would look better if he didn't throw a game losing interception. Now they just look butthurt.

The refs obviously arms looked fresh. Slinging that yellow on every Falcons 3rd down was impressive.

I would rather a doubleheader every Monday night than the Thursday night games

Anyone know what the injury count for the Falcons was?

What were the symptoms Kamara and Kelmete demonstrated that lead to the diagnosis of a concussion? Were they cognitively disoriented or impaired in motor function? Does anyone release that sort of info?
It seems that more concussions have been diagnosed this year than in all the years since the protocol was put in place. The sensitivity has gone up, but has the specificity?

For all the people that have a problem with what Brees said, are you just butthurt that it's coming from the guy who threw the game-losing INT or do you ACTUALLY like TNF?
If you like TNF, I'd love to hear why you think it's good for the league.

This thought is just off the top my head...Why not have it set-up that the teams who are on a bye, the weekend before, play on Thursday night?
When there are no more teams to have a bye then the Thursday night stops for that season.

3 days of prep and rest as opposed to 6.
practice and walkthroughs aren't tough on a body (99% of the time, something like Watson's injury is freak and rare).
overuse injuries exacerbated because they didn't get rest (muscle/tendon/joint issues)
then having to travel too?
We've ALWAYS said it, not just last night as an "excuse".
Sherman's achilles was a ticking time-bomb, but having to play on TNF only worsened his odds of injuring it. He gets 3 days of extra rest and he can likely get away with playing on it.
And before some moron says, "well don't play on it then", its the NFL, 16 game season, each game is already important as it is....worsened because most TNF games are divisional and those are even more important.

Did Drew suffer an injury? Just asking because he was short arming throws and bouncing them off the field turf all night. Of course that’s not when he wasn’t throwing crucial interceptions into double coverage!

Brees is exactly right.
I saw a poster mention this on a previous thread, but I am surprised the NFL does not utilize the bye week more efficiently for the Thursday night games.
Bye weeks occur generally from weeks 5 - 11. So you could have Thursday Night games from weeks 6 - 12, as well as the traditional Superbowl matchup on the first thursday and the Thanksgiving games (which I would imagine they could work the bye week into this).
TV people probably wouldn't have any of that though.

Maybe while on the topic he can ask why when we are assigned a Thursday night game it's always on the road

Ask the players about the quarter of a billion dollars they will lose, then see who likes Thursday night football.
