What experiments/reactions do ya'll actually perform in Organic Chem Lab? I suppose making asprin can be fun, but what do you do for a whole semester?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

You synthesize friends.
But seriously, don’t wear your gloves in the hall. I worked in the lab supply room for 2 years and I don’t know how many times I had to tell people to put on their damn goggles and not to wear gloves outside the lab.

You've come to the right place.

Organic Chem Labs 1&2 were incredibly boring and tedious at Auburn, and I typically liked labs. Sure, we synthesized a few compounds, but it was mostly running experiments to figure out some unknown compound that was given to us. Learn to read a Mass Spec and don't get behind on your lab notebook. Good luck

Don't remember what we did. Just hope your TA leaves the room for the quizes/tests.

Take it over the summer. It goes by way faster.
(It was 2hrs credit for 6hrs of lab time when I took it.)

You're not going to make any friends like this, nerd.

I remember a titration exercise with potassium permangate.

It's normally throwing some compounds in a column and doing TLC, recrystallization, distillations, GCMS, learning how to use a rotovap, etc. Here's a link to the course at syracuse I took with descriptions of the labs under course materials. LINK

We made nylon, which was pretty cool.

From LSU
CHEM 2364 Organic Chem Lab
At LSU OChem Lab is 2 credit hours (6 lab hours) taken in a single semester, typically with OChem II.

organic lecture was a nightmare

Nitrification of Toluene
Kidding DO NOT TRY THIS...BOOM if temperature goes above control range.

Dude. You're not supposed to breathe the fumes. That's what the fume hood's for.
We made Dilantin. I do not know why our lab instructor chose to have us synthesize an anti-convulsant, but that's what we did.
One day we also used dimethyl sulfoxide and potassium cyanide. The day you use a skin penetrating solvent AND an extremely lethal poison is a real serious day in the lab. We double gloved for that one. Everyone was thrilled when we finished and got out of there and were even more thrilled when everyone showed up for the next session.
In hindsight, I'm pretty sure our lab instructor was trying to kill us.

The "nerd" will probably have a higher income than you.
