I think Mealey set the rushing record at that time when we played Nick Saban and Michigan State in the Indy bowl.

Ha I member that shite. That was in the 3rd or 4th quarter and he was running right at us in the north end zone. Nothing but shoes on.

Believe me we were HAPPY to be in the Independence Bowl back then.

We were in the student section, that game was so cold until the alcohol kicked in. I remember converting a metal trash can in the parking lot while tailgating into a fire pit. We would send out people to find stuff to burn. I remember rushing the field after the game, but most of the middle of the of the game memories were lost with time or alcohol. I don't remember a streaker.

Going to the Independence Bowl back then was a big deal for LSU fans. I hope we never see those days again!

My first LSU game at the age of 8. Had to borrow a big jacket and gloves from a cousin who’s lived in a cold weather area. Froze my arse off but I will never forget it!

I was a high school senior in Shreveport, it was awesome

Mealey + Cecil Collins = mc^2!
We also had Kevin Faulk, Herb Tyler, Kendal Cleveland, Alan Faneca, Tommy Banks, Abram Booty. That team, particularly the offense, was LOADED. The defense was solid as well.
Interestingly enough most of the skill players on that team were brought in by *gasp* Curley Hallman.

Rondell Mealey had 222 yards rushing.
I'm not sure how LSU lost to this team at home.
It was colder in the Shreveport matchup than it was the South Bend one (I was at both), with the wind chill factored in.
I remember going to some ghetto arena in Shreveport that was hosting an LSU pep rally that afternoon, and eating the best gumbo I've ever had. Also, I ate some boudin in Natchitoches that was unbelievably good.
That was my first real trip to North Louisiana. I was impressed, except the cold temperatures sucked.

Those days and the 8-10 year after were the best time to be an LSU fan, it was actually fun.

Fun game. Very cold as mentioned. Somehow i recall opening beer in the stands. Mealey ran out his cleats and in his socks on a run
Bought my tix directly from ND. They asked why my mailing address was Baton Rouge and I just said “ go irish! I just happen to live here” then they shipped them

I was at this game. Six years old. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing that we were playing in a bowl game and didn’t want to leave even though the weather was horrible.

In 1997 the Irish next went to Louisiana State University (LSU) to face the 11th ranked Tigers. Looked to be outmatched, the Irish didn't commit a penalty all game, had no turnovers, and didn't give up any plays longer than one 28 yard pass, to upset the Tigers and move back to 5–5 on the season
ND, LSU = P O W E R

Me too, with my father in law. Miserable but so satisfying. ND had nothing.

Was there for all those games! It's why I still love the Indy bowl and go every year. Now with Walk-ons and Jacob Hester helping promote/Sponsor it and actually care about seeing it grow I'm excited.
