Agree, Dicks blows. They have the smallest selection of inventory at the highest prices.

I have seen a better spread of hunting gear at a KMart (not joking).

The newer dicks/f&s in Lafayette isn’t bad. I’d rather go to f&s over academy because they are always out of stock of damn near everything at academy. Prices ain’t really much more and less rift raft in f&s too, at least to me.

Funny you say that...My Remington 870 back in 1989 came from a Kmart.

About the only thing I ever get there is CO2 refills, and that is just because they're closest to the house and offer the 5th one free. I'd go to the Academy if I could, but they always have an issue with the tank or are completely out. Other than that, all high priced stuff. I don't need $70 under armour shorts to run in.

The last time I went to the Dicks on Causeway the person working the fishing department didn't know what fluoro carbon leader was.

I don't understand how these big stores manage inventory. Most of the time I go to the Academy in Metaire they are out of 20lb power pro and most colors of Matrix Shad. I guess the inventory algorithm doesn't understand that these are two of the most popular items for marsh fishing and that marsh fishing is popular here??

No handguns, crappy hunting cloths selection at laughable prices and I dont know who orders their shite but a week before opening day of hunting season in North MS and you have zero inventory of 7mm-08 or 45-70. Its a good thing you have 5 different kinds of 22-250 though.

im not boycotting them for political reasons, they just never have shite that I need

We had a Dick's store open here in central MS a couple of years back. I was excited about it and went in to look around. came out completely disappointed, as most of their stuff seemed to be oriented towards shite like golf and tennis and that kind of thing. I generally like sports like hunting, fishing, etc. never went back.

The Dicks in Metairie could be a gold mine if they just sold ammo. How do you open up a sporting goods store, especially knowing that no one else around sells ammo, and not include it.

They would make a ton on me alone at lunch.

I do go to the one in Slidell when I have points and they have a good deal on 223.

You do realize there are 2 sporting goods stores probably within 2-3 miles of that Metairie location, right?

It's all done on a national level by no one with actual experience with the product. So one person (with 3-4 direct reports) orders the quantities of, say, fishing lures for the entire company. He doesn't know anything about fishing lures, he was buying tennis balls or flip flops or bicycles last year.

The company gives this guy $xxx,000 to spend on fishing tackle, so he buys as much as he can get. Then, his direct reports use computer models to apportion inventory based on last year's sales. If you sold 12 last year, maybe you get 16 this year. Did you sell 12 but have 200 people ask for it after you sold out? Doesn't matter, still getting 16. Assuming the dept lead and hardlines managers care enough to fight for product, they might get 200 more...but it'll likely be out of season - mid-summer when it's needed in spring or something.

There really is no thought put into the inventory of a single district, let alone an individual store, something that just doesn't work with sporting goods product.

As for the ammo issue that a couple other people have raised, I really don't know the answer. Dicks didn't carry 7mm-08 or .303 or .280 or 6.5 Creedmoor or .300 Blackout or hardly any magnum rifle cartridges in any capacity nationwide. They were too focused on selling the most generic guns and cartridges they could. 75% of the gun wall is dedicated to .22s, 12 ga pumps, and bolt actions in 30-06. The second we got anything remotely interesting in it would sell off the wall in a day or two.

Puglias and .....?

No thanks on paying outrageous prices at Puglias. If you're talking about Academy for the other, you must not drive through Metry traffic at lunch if you think I can go there, eat, and get back in an hour. There really isn't much of anything near Vets.
