China calling the shots in Zimbabwe

The general behind Zimbabwe’s coup may have sought Chinese approval days before the army launched its takeover of Robert Mugabe’s government, it emerged on Wednesday.
Mr Mugabe remained under house arrest, still president of Zimbabwe if in name alone, a prisoner of once slavishly loyal generals who now hold the country’s fate in their hands.
As the former British colony faced a deeply uncertain future under military tutelage, a trip to Beijing by Gen Constantine Chiwenga, the head of the armed forces, last week has reignited concerns about rising Chinese influence in Africa.
The general held high-level meetings with officials from the Defence Ministry, and visited a school to observe a Shaolin Kung Fu class.
Although the Chinese foreign ministry insisted Gen Chiwenga’s visit was a “routine visit”, analysts have suggested that Beijing may have given the rebellious army chief its tacit blessing in advance.
Mr Mnangagwa and his allies have made conscious efforts to court Beijing as both an investor and a military partner.
China, which has displaced Western rivals to become Africa’s largest trading partner and is a major investor in Zimbabwe, notably declined to call for Mr Mugabe’s restoration yesterday, despite his long ties to Beijing dating back to the Cold War.
Last year, China pledged to invest $4bn in Zimbabwe for investment, loans and aid over the next three years.
Responding to the coup, the Chinese foreign ministry merely stated that Beijing was “paying close attention to developments”, prompting suggestions that China had agreed to sacrifice “Comrade Mugabe” in the interests of an orderly succession.

China is in the process of taking over the entire continent of Africa. It's going to be old school 19th century colonialism.

So ultimately they swapped one colonial power calling the shots (UK) for another (China).

Can't be. Stevie Wonder said peace has come to Zimbabwe.

Someone is going to fill the power vacuum left by US disengagement.

Sounds like Zimbabwe may be getting a whole lot of freedom soon...
Actually screw em... They have nothing of value to add to the global economy.. Maybe they can start making all our electronics over there?

I'm speculating but my guess is a land grab. Zimbabwe has more unattended/poorly tended cultivated land than any country in the world. It's basically an ag hedge.

Rhodesia once provided most of the grain for the continent of Africa and outside of a few drought years exported to other countries. It has become a importer exclusively now and the country's debt to gdp is out of control.
Rhodesia oddly enough was the only western country that was abandoned by both Britain in 1965 and then the United States during the Nixon adm via negotiations with Germany who supported the country at the time as well. Israel was the final supporter of Rhodesia in the end until the Marxist elected Mugabe government took over. Israel feared the influx of Marxists regimes impact on the region. They were proven correct.

China is ruling Africa pretty much these days. They have invested assloads into the continent, because the government is pretty sure there will be a food crisis on their hands in the second half of the century.
China is going to be fine during this food crisis because they’ve been investing in this for over a decade, but they will rip everything from Africa once it occurs. The Africans may like this increase in infrastructure and jobs for now, but the Chinese are fully planning on betraying them and letting them starve.

China will treat African nations like the army of Saron treated middle earth...they just want unregulated access to their national resources. This us why they give these huge loans for infrastructure projects that the poor nations can never pay off. When they default, the Chinese miners move in.

Is life imitating art? Maybe Whiterose (of Mr Robot) is behind the fall of Mugabe.
