I really can't go much farther in this thread - the OP is a fricking idiot. Any person who breaks up a dog fight with their hands shouldn't own dogs
Is there a better way? Sorry, I'm not trash who owns or trains aggressive dogs so I'm not around actual dog fights much.

Also, anyone who is shocked or surprised that dogs fight one another shouldn't own dogs.
Again, I'm not trailer trash so when my dogs "fight" it's playful and never anywhere close to what OP described. I never have to worry about separating them.

His dog was outside first. Your wife is responsible.

Horrible. Hope your dog is ok.

What did the neighbor expect your dog to do, lick his hand???? Of course the dog bit him because he was terrified. I would look for another place to live, so that my dog/s would not be in harm’s way. Frick your neighbor and his dog!!!

False. My wife was outside with our dogs. His GF opened the door and let his dog out without looking to see if our dogs were back there first.

Exactly. I didn’t grow up with dogs (as you can probably tell). I have two of my own who are similar in size, so of course they wrestle all the time. I know what a “scuffle” looks like. This was a level of aggression I hadn’t seen before. If no humans intervened, that dog would have caused permanent damage to mine.
Also, one person had to go to the emergency room and two others received medical attention for bites. I don’t understand the people who read that as “nothing happened”.
As far as how my neighbor handled it, I’d say he’s done everything he could to make it right and take responsibility for what happened.

Kill his dog, kick his arse and frick his woman.

The neighbor's gf is the only one with ANY blame here, unless you wanna blame all parties for not introducing the dogs ahead of this. The dog did absolutely zero wrong. He went out into his own yard and found a strange dog there and defended the property.

I know you're upset because your dog is injured, but goddamn, not everyone is Cesar Milan and know exactly how a dog is going to react to another dog. They're very unpredictable sometimes.
You should just accept their apology and offer to pay medical bills and be done with it. Just have to be more careful with the dogs since you share a backyard.

If this was a pit bull, this board would be screaming to have the dog put down.
Aggression should not be tolerated in dogs. If you don’t know how your dog is going to react to another dog, then you’re a bad owner who doesn’t know their own dog.

That’s what I’m thinking. The fact that he NEVER lets his dog around ours tells me he knew it would act like that. Which is what makes me even more mad.
First of all that sucks for your family, i hope everyone turns out ok in the end.
I don't know if that fact should make you more mad though - its understandable that he doesn't want to kill the animal he is attached to and unfortunately someone else in his life fricked up? I mean it is a shitty situation but he may not have known it would go exactly like that if the dog hadn't gone ape shite prior even if he had a feeling based on how it acted on a leash, etc.
Some of these people that take in rescues for example end up with aggressive dogs they really don't know how to handle well (not saying that is the situation here).
^ all of the above assumes this is an overly aggressive dog towards essentially all other dogs and not just a my backyard / territorial thing.

Yep. OP your neighbor is a POS that should have known how his dog was going to react or erred on the side of caution because he didn't know how your dogs would react.
ETA: Also, frick your neighbor's GF for not paying attention when letting the dog out.

Some hypocrites here would change their opinion but not me. No dog involved did anything wrong here.

Dog on dog aggression, especially territorial, is a natural occurrence. Also the neighbor avoided the dogs being out together bc he either suspected or didn't know what to expect. He has done all the right things and OP is kinda being a baby about some of it.

You share a backyard with your neighbor?

You initially wrote that your wife was "letting the dogs out" when you heard a scream. That implies that the neighbor's dog was out first or let out at the exact same time as your dogs.
You just updated your post after insulting someone. Learn to write better.

I never write that and I only edited for typos.
To paint a picture: my wife was standing outside in the backyard with our two dogs. His girlfriend opens the door to let their dog out, but does not immediately come outside with it. His dog runs up to one of mine, snuffs it for a second, and then attacks. My dog lets out a very loud scream because she didn’t expect the first bite and got snagged near the ear pretty good. Both women start screaming. I hear this and run outside to find the neighbors dog aggressively biting on the neck of my dog. Both women are crying because they cannot separate them. My dog is crying badly because she is hurt and scared. My other dog was trying to fight the bigger dog off, but failing. Neighbor also heard the noise and comes running outside. I grab my dog by the hind legs, he grabs his dog but the mouth/Head. His hands come out pretty bloody and I’m covered in shite from my dog.
I agree that his gf is really the only one who fricked up. Everyone else handled things as best they could. I didn’t grow up with dogs and mine have never been aggressive, so seeing and stopping this behavior wasn’t something I was prepared for. I’ve learned how to handle it and we won’t find ourselves in this situation again.
It sounded and felt worse in the moment than it ended up being. Seeing the woman you love crying with blooded hands and an animal you love screaming out for help made me angry and protective. So yeah, I was emotional when I made the original post.
