What to do prior to laying paving stones...

So I’m clearing out a small area of vegetation in the back yard. It’s a work in progress, and has been for some time now. I’m thinking of ripping up this viney shite that has been growing and just throwing down some paving stones over a 15-20 square foot area. Under this vine crap is just dirt. Nothing special. I? still have some leftover sand bags from the hurricane. Is this suitable to lay down before the stones to even things out a bit?

Clear out all the grass and leaves, etc. Spread levelling sand. Lay pavers down. Fill in between with hardening/finishing sand. Brush everything off very lightly. Water/mist the finishing sand to let it harden.
Voila
Voila

Also...on a similar note. Anything special to do before throwing down a weed mat? I am going to clear the land, scrape up all of the dirt, loose twigs, etc.

You can spray poison but I wouldn’t recommend that. It can carry over into other areas of the yard and kill grass/beds.

Bluntly speaking, I just want to get rid of the weedy areas of the yard. They have been here since I moved in. I am not particularly interested in having beautiful sod ready to replace. I am okay with stones, rock gardens, etc

Besides the above tips of using sand to float your pavers and make them level I would recommend putting ground cover sheeting under that sand so that in five years you don't have weeds growing up around your pavers.
It's cheap, easy to install, and effective.

I know you were trying to be funny and all, but your comment doesn’t even make sense

They make some vicious scorched earth ground clearing poisons at Home Depot. I have a gravel side yard that sprayed with it, but it doesn’t connect to any vegetation and drains away from my yard so it limited impact.
Just ask the people there. It works well.
ETA:
I also know a guy that mixed salt with his leveling sand and it worked to kill everything

Make sure that you have the money to pay the contractor.

it makes sense, before he "lays" the stones.. he's making a joke that he's going to make love to the stones, hence the nice dinner and movie.

You better lay some plastic down under them unless you want those vines, weeds and grass growing up around them for years and being a pain in our arse

You will want a 4" compacted base of 6/10 limestone extending 6" beyond the borders. Bring the limestone in 2-3" at a time. Compact each time until you have 4" base. Then, add paving sand. Screed it. You want 1" or less of sand. Then, without stepping on the sand begin laying pavers. Add edge restraint. Sweep polymeric sand into joints. Run compactor over pavers. Use blanket so as not to scratch stones. Keep doing this until joints are filled. Follow instructions for curing the polymeric sand. When done you can marvel at your genius.
Or, you can just throw pavers down on too of dead grass and call it a day. Six months later you will regret it, though.

You could spray roundup if you want.

You probably right, but he said 15’- 20’ sf. So that’s like a 5x4’ area. Max
He doesn’t have to overthink this.
OP could have probably have this completed in less time than keeping up with this thread.
