A little trick I read about years ago and have done:
Put your hand around his wrist firmly, don't squeeze tightly.
Say in his ear in a low voice, "don't do that again or something might happen."
Stare into his eyes and then let go of his wrist.

try to lift the knee slow to guard it but at the same time hitting him with it to bump him to the ground. After a few times he should catch on. I know if i were your boss and you told me about it, i would whip his arse but your boss may not do the same which is why the kid is awful.
