flareups occur on a grill when the fat renders out of the meat and catches fire. the best way to prevent it is to cut the excess fat off the meat and try not to use too much oil when marinating/basting. if the fire is hot enough to cook the meat, it is hot enough to ignite dripping fat, so forget trying to keep that from happening.

fwiw, I always grill on a pretty hot fire and never walk away from the grill while doing it.

We are also grilling for several hours, multiple times in a weekend. Maybe we need to clean it more, or do something that takes the least amount of time

Literally never flares.

ETA - I cook very few things that require the lid open, so I'm sure the helps.

Get some grillgrates. Best grilling accessory I've ever purchased. Eliminates flare ups and turns your grill into an infrared searing machine.

Yess! Thanks, this looks like it could work!

You need to keep your grill clean and it depends on what you are cooking. Something like chicken thighs can not be left unattended for long because of the fat in them no matter how clean your grill is. Grill grates won’t do anything for you if you have a ton of build up in the bottom of your grill.

Where in the grill did the fire burn? Are you talking about the bottom part under the burners or over them?

Invest in a premium quality wood pellet grill. Traeger makes one that can cook steaks and smoke brisket and boston butt over an even fire. They aren't cheap, mine was $900. I can select any wood flavor I like, for a low price.

won't help. flare ups happen due to grease being released from the meat, or any oil or other flammable marinade ingredients. there is no way to combat this other than to put more distance between the flame and the meat
