I am seeing things like cost of living being as much as 30-35% higher in Richardson. I have a potential job there, and a 25% raise is a possibility, but I don't think 30-35% is.

Is it really that much higher? Seems to be mostly due to housing and maybe utilities? Other things seem to be mostly a wash.

Thoughts?

TIA

You pay more property taxes in exchange for good schools.

Considering that private schooling probably isn't counted in BR's Cost of Living, you might come out ahead.

Housing is tight and prices are rising due to corporate relo but it's definitely not cost prohibitive. Milk, bread, gas, electricity, cable etc isn't any higher so I don't know what you mean by that.

Take the raise and move. You'll figure it out and make it work.

You can get a lot of house for the money a little farther outside the loop. Like Rockwall to the East and Frisco to the North. Also, Texas doesn't have a state income tax so you'll keep more of your paycheck.

Cost of housing is crazy in Dallas these days. On top of that, Property taxes are very high percentage wise and you'll be paying that higher percentage on a more expensive house. Homeowners Insurance is also higher than average in Texas. Dinner/ Drinks/ Entertainment is higher too but at least you have control over that.

You pay more property tax, but have no state income tax.

There's no state income tax so increase what you would he making about 5%. As far as housing, yes it's expensive if you buy. I live in Dallas and went to LSU and apartment living isn't too much different. A nice 1 BR around downtown is about $1250/month. If you go out to Plano or The Colony it's going to be about $1000/month. Quality of life is x1,000,000 better.

Check out various cost of living calculators. I looked at one I've used, and it said it was 30% higher in Richardson than Baton Rouge. Mostly because of housing. BR is about 30% below national average, Richardson is about 35% above it.

Here's a couple sites I've tried whenever I've relocated

Rockwall for sure, maybe not Frisco anymore. I live around Rockwall now and commute to Richardson/Garland. Not bad at all.

And you can deduct property taxes from your federal income tax, for now at least. You can't deduct tuition.

That's not one for one, again, because you can deduct state income taxes on your itemized deductions.

IF you itemize and deductions aren't a $1 for $1 so this is really negligable.

I've been here 25 years and yearly price increases have never been close to what they are now. Prices in my hood have doubled over the last 8 years.....and prices didn't drop much in the recession....pretty much stayed level. And most of DFW has seen prices rise close to 10% per year over the last 8 years. Basically, a $250k house in the burbs 15 years ago before the recession costs $375k now. For close-in houses in the city its been a 12% or more rise per year.
