Cont.

I mentioned earlier about there possibly being a "glitch in the matrix." Let me explain.

While T4 was stalking his 8 point I was sitting in a box stand on another piece of the property. Behind me, a small waterway was the stage for a mallard drake and hen as they danced atop the water for my amusement. I took a picture on my phone. It was ok, but it didnt do the IRL scene any justice. It was one of those zen-like moments you can only get in the woods with mid 30 temps and sunlight veaming through a heavy fog. A moment that stays with you. A good one. Here's the pic:

We slept at a Holiday Inn Express while T4 was in the hospital for a week or so. When my wife and I walked into that hotel room for the first time and sat our bags down I fell to my knees and broke down again. The print that I saw on the wall of that hotel room
made me lose it:

(Not the exact print. Couldn't find it online, but that'sthe jist of it. The hotel let me take the actual one. It's in storage while we're transitioning to a new home).

Glitch? Maybe. God's hand? Likely. Lesson learned? You bet.

I still haven't killed anything since that day. I've tried. I'm just not quite the same yet. I don't know that I'll ever be. Maybe getting some of this off of my chest will help. I don't know.

It goes without saying that T4 has handled the situation exceptionally well. I think he even gets a kick out of that gnarly scar he gas now sometimes. I'mso sorry to him for the pain I've caused. If i could take it on as my own, I would ten fold.

I hope that you all will take our story and use it as a reminder to avoid going through what we did or something much worse. To those of you that have been affected by horrific accidents you have my prayers and my sympathy. I pray that you all will have safe, fun hunts for the rest of your days.

Man that's hard to read. I can't even imagine what that must have been like for both of you guys. I don't really want to TBH.

People say this Crap all the time...but God really must have had a plan for both of you.

Thanks for sharing...it's stories like this that make guys like me be safer in the woods.

Jesus yalls story is powerful and one hell of a lesson. One day, and it may be years, y’all will laugh about it. I know it doesn’t seem like it now but time has a way of healing. I’ll send some prayers your way too bud. Can’t imagine.

Damn man....most of us here can't even imagine what you and him went through.

It's just good to know that at least somewhere something higher is watching over in at least some of these instances.

Not much we can say to you but I hope you find it in you to get back out there and do some hunting....maybe even can find it in you to hunt with T4 again if you and him are up for it. It may be the type of thing that helps you and him both.

Stay strong bro.

25 or so years ago my buddy and I were climbing out the back of a truck. We were only 15-16 years old, but we were already living the dream. Hunting and fishing everyday and we were damn good at it. I was on the ground and unloading a Remington 700. An old one that you had to take off safety to unload. Well, he's climbing out at the time with his head near the muzzle (wasn't aware how close he was......my fault) that was pointed in what should have been a safe direction. Click safety off to open bolt and BOOM. I don't know how close I came to shooting him in the head, but it was too damn close. I still think about it all the time. It gives me chills and makes me grimace. It terrifies me how quickly it can happen. I look at my son and I understand what my carelessness could have taken from his family.

Hang in there, dude. Hug your kids. Hug him. Be thankful you both have a second chance. Life is good. You two dudes just have a better understanding of that then most.

Thank you for your inspiring story of perseverance and motivation for me to share my lesson learned.

Please consider my error, fathers with a youngin ten'ish, sitting on a bucket next to you, acquiring the passion for dove hunting, at your favorite roost, beautiful evening, they're coming in singles early, spaced out, my son was loving fetching the downed birds and returning to his seat to scan the horizon.

I had shot a few that remain in the field. What could go wrong with a beautiful sportsman paradise scene? As I'm swinging the Rem1100 to put a bead on a left to right shot, my son sitting on my right is zoned in on the flopping of a grounded bird's wing.

Simultaneously, he stands, takes a step to the left, and I fire. Over his head. Obviously I was an idiot and unbelievably careless. I was a young father. Hadn't been in that exact scary position before to know better. I'm 51 now. That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

James 1:2-4
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.
