The Mazda CX-5 sunroof just exploded while driving down the highway. Nothing else was scratched just a loud boom.
Still trying to figure out how a rock could have hit it

if tempered glass has some stress on it, as soon as there is a nick, it will shatter like yours did.
same thing happened to my tempered shower door...one night at 3AM, it sounded like a shotgun went off in my bathroom and there was a pile of shattered glass on the floor.

There are quite a few cars that have been linked with sunroof explosions due to internal stress. I think Mazda was one of the manufacturers but not 100% sure.
I should have said an imbalance in the internal stress, all sunroofs will be tempered glass so it is one big sheet of opposing stresses.

You jest, but back in 1993 I was on I110 bringing a buddy to the airport in my car when the little trim window in the door of my Mazda cracked and there was a perfect .22 size hole in it. Freaked the lady sitting in the seat out pretty good.
Could have just been a pellet, but still.

Wasnt a rock. There has been a bunch of that happening recently.
A guy at work had his driver side window explode the other day.
And the owner had a f250 a few years ago do the same thing.

Tempered glass usually only shatters when it is hit on the corners.
Maybe there was some rubber on the sides that became loose and you didnt replace it, so the piece of glass also became loose and started to vibrate violently until it hit the corner with enough pressure to break the glass.

Sad part is it's probably a 1000 bucks to fix it

That same year, I was landscaping the Burger King off of Choctaw right by I110 and someone shot at me twice with a .22 while I was unloading the trailer. Both shots penetrated the rear door of my van. Thank god they were a bad shot.

Moon rock.
Second row glass on my wife's Honda did the same thing about a month ago.

Doubt it’s from a rock. Has it been replaced before? If it has bring back to glass shop, if not then contact the dealership. I haven’t done a Mazda sunroof and honestly don’t get too many sunroofs but it does occasionally happen. I’ve never known one to be hit by a rock. It’s usually either randomly shatters like yours, or someone intentionally broke it, or a limb or something. A sunroof randomly shattering is obviously a defect and you should stress to corporate or whomever if dealership won’t work with you.
