A diner at a Long Beach, Calif., restaurant recently called out the business for passing off Popeyes fried chicken as its own, according to Foodbeast.com. The diner claims he saw box of Popeyes being spirited into the kitchen at Sweet Dixie Kitchen after he ordered fried chicken. He tasted it and he knew.

That doesn't seem very cost effective.

I read somewhere else they were selling it for $13/plate, so there was still some profit. Although you’re right - $13/plate when you make it yourself is much more profitable.

I checked out their yelp page and was surprised to see that most of the food looks pretty good actually. Looks like a small breakfast / lunch cafe. I guess they just don't want to mess around with making fried chicken By the size of the place and the variety of the offerings I would bet there's several other items on the menu they don't make.

If anyone remembers Fricken Chicken on Burbank it always tasted like their biscuits were just Popeyes' with more butter.

So the owner admits it?
Serious question: how are there not rules against this?
Server: Today's special is a flame-grilled cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. That is served with a side of fries. And that is going to be $16.
Customer: I'll have that.
Server: Certainly, excellent choice. One of the chef's specials.
Walks across the street to Burger King, throws everything on a plate
Server: Enjoy your meal. I should also note that a 20% gratituity is automatically added to your bill.

A LOT of restaurants use pre-made food, but using another restaurant's product is taking it too far.
Ever wonder why half the egg rolls you've ever eaten at Chinese restaurants have tasted exactly the same? They're frozen and supplied by a wholesaler in California. The chili that you get at many places is identical for the same reason.

Oh pre-made food I totally know is used and actually understand. But like you said, just straight-up using another places food off their menu is an entire different situation.
Can you imagine if Galatoire's on Perkins decided to start serving turkey burgers and just had a runner go to Burgersmith across the street whenever someone ordered one? And charged twice what burgersmith does for it?

Popeyes bought the right to Diversified Food's (Al Copeland's company that still supplied Popeyes and other Copeland's ventures w/ seasonings and food, etc) recipes in 2014 for $43 million. Id imagine their legal team is on this.
So yeah, if they are literally using Popeyes' recipes, they are acquiring them illegally and breaking the law selling the product as well.
If they made a replica recipe that closely mimics Popeyes, not sure there is anything that can be done

It said they saw the popeye box whisked into the kitchen. They are not taking the time to steal recipes just using a done product on their plates.

Yeah they are straight up going to Popeyes, buying chicken, walking it into the kitchen, and plating it. No recipe required.

that wouldn't happen in New Orleans, would take 30 minutes just waiting in the "pull forward spot" at Popeyes

The packets if Cajun Sparkle was a dead giveaway

How can this be sustainable?
You're literally walking over there every 5 minutes or you're serving cold chicken.
And doesn't the manager at Popeyes find this suspicious?
