You have to give the Pledge of Allegiance as an adult in your workplace?

You don't have to as evidenced by the young man who refused to do so today. He was the first person to not do so in the 18 years I've been there.

Actually, lots of mixed race couples here. Nothing unusual there. They're all pledging and praying, too!

Einstein was talking about Nationalism as in Nazism.

People are using the election of Trump as an excuse to beat up on the idea of American Exceptionalism. I think American Exceptionalism is pretty apparent, and I don't think there's anything wrong with acknowledging it.

Please note, I said exceptionalism, not perfection.

I wonder if this isn't a warehouse thing? I worked at one for about 2 years in 92-94. We did this before each day, not just meetings. Was only 12 or so of us though (and the temps who showed up later in the day).

I'm surprised companies still pray or do that on the job.

All I know is I would lose my job today if I ever bashed Obama or any Democrat at work. Period. I could bash the other side all day and get away with it. Knowing this, I keep my mouth shut.

I felt like the kid could at the very least have stood up for this guy who saw several of his friends die, regardless of whether you believe we were right or wrong for being over there.

The Pledge of Allegiance was drafted by a socialist and solicited into schools by a socialist. Its basis in our history is not to teach us about freedom, it is to teach us to worship the State.

There is a reason many Christian sects, specifically Jehovah's Witnesses, refuse to say it. They believe it to violate the 1st and 2nd Commandments. I agree with them.

A rose by any other name...

When some Americans wave the flag at other Americans, and become offended when others refuse to "respect" the flag, anthem or any other national symbol in a way they find acceptable then nationalism is rife. When an "enemy within" is designated and actively pursued based upon his perceived "allegiance" to a country's symbols, then those symbols have supplanted the Constitution they represent.

Nationalism isn't yet at fever pitch in America but it's definitely fervent. The real danger to our Republic is when we forget the Constitution and worship its symbols.

Even from a very young age I found the pledge to be creepy af.

Why the hell are we saying a prayer to a piece of cloth? I really could not imagine trying to get my employees to do it every morning and still be taken seriously.

Full staff meeting today, over 100 of us in our conference room. Started the meeting as always.....with a prayer and then one of our veteran's led the pledge. Young AA who works in our warehouse never got out of his seat. His super is a former Clemson football player (also AA) and was standing directly behind him.

By the way, we're located in a very small South Carolina town. This was my first experience with the "protesters".

I was much angrier than I thought I would be.

If I hated being somewhere so much, I'd leave.

WTF kind of place do you work?

This.

How this place hasn’t had SOME ACLU attention? Unless you job is as a Marine, I can’t see a staff meeting beginning with a prayer and pledge.

How some atheist or agnostic hasn’t said something is surprising.

Pretty sure OP was just pointing out how silly the NFL stuff is by framing it as a regular workplace.

think what upsets folks in this situation is that we're a very tight company. We've grown up together, attended weddings and funerals together and watched our kids grow up and move off. I think when something like this happens it just shocks folks who were otherwise very "safe" in their surroundings. For many of us, we've stayed with this organization for the safety, the familiarity and the knowledge that we all believed in the same God and were all very proud of our country.

Well if you're also tight-knit and respect each other so much then maybe you should ask the guy who didn't stand for the pledge why he did it. You ever think of that instead of being so offended?
