My wife works with a lady who has a 5 year old that is 80 pounds. She looks like honey boo boo.
Anyway, the parent was offended when the pediatrician told her that her child needed to lose weight. She went on a Facebook rant and actual adults consoled her and told her to go after the doctor.
This is the society that we live in.

I see the rise being caused by this:
Everyone has to work now. And they have to work longer and harder hours
Gone are the days where no women work and they stay home and make a nice meal for the family
And gone are the days we simply go to work and punch a clock 9-5, our work never stops with cell phones and laptop computers
This causes people to eat quick, filling shitty meals
There are other factors as well, but I think this is the biggest catalyst

We're addicted to shiny screens. No time for exercise or cooking decent meals.

And people drive everywhere instead of walking.

I think you are absolutely right.
But at the opposite end of the spectrum, there have never been so many gyms as there are now.

All those stupid Facebook Tasty videos where they add shitloads of butter and cheese aren't helping.

I'll add another wild card: growing epidemic of alcoholism.

Portion sizes are crazy. When you make a fist with your hand then your meat portion should be no bigger than the size of the top of your hand.
People have gotten away from fruits, veggies, and cooking their own foods. Prepackaged foods and sodas are killing America.

prepared meals instead of scratch cooking
Office work vs more physical work
Paying people for chores instead of doing them ourselves
Leisure time has become sedentary instead of active.
Participation trophy culture

While I'm 300lbs, I'm 24% body fat the last time we did a water test after my accident.
Techically, I don't think I'm obese

Point of reference for those who are wondering about themselves:

BMI is only one part of the story. Fat % is much more of an indicator imo.
