The World Cup, and Soccer in general, are not made for the US Sports fan who has an attention span of 10 seconds. And with no vested interest in it, I doubt Joe Blow is going to turn on a soccer game because he can "drink to it".
I'm continually amazed by the strong opinions held by people who have no fricking clue what they're talking about. Ok dude, when the World Cup is trouncing the shite out of mid-Summer MLB and everything else next year, be sure to revisit this topic.

I like how people are pretending bars/pubs/etc. weren't completely slammed in 2014 throughout the tournament (including after the US got bounced). I actually think that the US drove some of that interest and it carried over, but the World Cup will still do massive numbers, especially for games with good times in the US.
Not to mention the fact that a huge swath of the country has loyalty to some non-US team.

Lol NBC and the Prem have done far more to popularize the sport in the US than the USMNT and MLS. There will be millions upon millions tuning in to see the players they watch every weekend.
Will it affect viewership? Sure. Are Fox in any way 'screwed'? Not a chance lol.

Fox's coverage of the World Cup is going to be disgustingly bad so it's a bit of a silver lining we don't have to watch it.
Bash ESPN all you want but one thing they do right is cover soccer and the World Cup.

Much like most other sports, there is an entire contingent of people who have been sitting around waiting for a moment like this to loudly exclaim how much they don't about soccer.

Honestly, the number of people doing that about soccer right now is probably at an all time low for America, relatively.
Part of that is the growth of soccer generally. But I think even people who don't care especially much like the World Cup. It's a month long party, what's not to like.

Maybe if the games were on at decent times then it might outdraw a regular season mlb matchup.

The only soccer team I follow is FC Dallas from MLS but I still like watching the World Cup. You don't have to be an uber soccer fan that knows everything to appreciate what an awesome event it is.

I think the times will suck, but the group stage of the Euros, while competing with ANOTHER SOCCER TOURNAMENT, outdrew plenty of MLB games

Had the US made it, the chances of us making it past group play were very slight.

I do think it helps spark interest in the rest of the tournament, it gets a momentum going with non-soccer fans having a good time and sort of saying "this was fun, I'm going to keep watching this shite."

There is definitely a spill-on effect from having people watching, but I doubt Fox bought this thing thinking the US was going to be a significant part of the tournament.
