Correct, but you do have to have a licensed PI for the judge to do it. He won't go off your word or even pictures that you or a friend took. Even if it's in the act. Has to be a PI.

I make about the same as you and my ex makes about 50 G's/yr. I pay $1000/mo but my son is not on my insurance because she works for a hospital. You're looking at $1000/mo or more homie. Good thing I only have 3 yrs left and when I'm done, it's Sonic for everyone on this board!

I make a little more than half your salary and I'm paying $1,200 a month for interim spousal support and $350 for child support. The soon to be ex is making around 40k part time. The kids are split 50/50. We also split the bills pretty much evenly so don't forget you're still responsible for
bills.
WTF. Did you bang the judge's wife? You pay over 3x more to your cheating wife than to your kid AND you split custody?

How did this thread make it this far without this being referenced.

Cheaper to keep her.
People say this, but is this really true? How is paying $1200/month more expensive than keeping your wife and full custody of your child?
I hate to make the kid sound like a financial transaction, but I'm interested in the math some folks are purporting in here.

Yep, really sucks but I saw the lawyer put all the numbers in. Spousal support is what killing me but luckily it's over soon.
And like others are saying, it's totally worth it.

But even then, how is $1200/month more expensive than keeping a wife and child as your dependent?

Because that's 1200 you remove from personal money supply and you aren't factoring in a new baby momma/wife.

Are y'all on alright terms? Ask if she would be willing to work something out without child support.

Female perspective - hormones are crazy for a while after having a baby - and being completely alone with a baby/toddler for 2 weeks at a time can make you start to feel a little crazy. And breast feeding for a year and a half? Mama needs a drink asap. Your baby is 1 1/2, so I'm assuming you've only been married for a few years...calm down and go see a marriage counselor - you'd be amazed at how much an outside perspective can help both of you.
Please do this ASAP or your baby wont know you from the next guy who will be raising him/her half the time.

i honestly think if I was in OPs position
id start having "back problems"
work part-time
drain all assets - buy bitcoin (say you lost it gambling )
make cash withdrawals
start having lunch/drinks at the casino
go to gambling addiction meetings
when judge says where the money says, say "im addicted"
profit

Well yeah, having more kids will be more expensive, but it's not like that changes if you stick with the wife.
Idk, I feel pretty confident saying $15k per year for one child is a good deal considering the cost of a child on and quality of life @ $110k/year.
ETA - For clarity, I mean $15k/year is on par or cheaper than what one child would likely cost you on that salary.

LA support schedule
You are responsible for 63.5% of the child's welfare based on you and the future ex's salary. The formula for the state at your combined income level says you should be spending $1325 per month on the child. You are responsible for 63.5% of that which is $841.38 per month. This does not include costs for childcare and medical costs. Add those costs to the $1325 per month and multiple by 63.5% and you should get pretty close to what you will have to pay.

I'd be worried about the well-being of my child. That may be naive or pie in the sky, but supporting your child financially should be a priority.

If you are okay with the morality of knowing you left your firstborn at one and a half because it was a QoL decision, then you deserve the serious amount of hate coming your way.

true, thats the rub
but id rather support them voluntarily than through a court order
if you start working part-time, because of "back issues", there is less to take
at any rate id start draining my assets into bitcoin asap

No, that's not the intent of my comment.
I'm saying that considering the quality of life you'd provide for your child @ $110k per year, paying child support of $1200/month seems like a good deal.
I'm question this concept that keeping your wife is cheaper than the child support.

OP also needs to prepare for the arse rape that is Spousal Support. Oh, and she will almost certainly get full use and occupancy of the home with you having to pay the mortgage (usually included as part of the SS package in that scenario) without reimbursement.
